You can use either Mithril Fireworks or the Berserker character. I think the Mithril Fireworks design is at Barad-ur in Mordor, and the Berserker character is at Helm's Deep in Rohan.
I think I'm getting there with the blacksmith and crafting. I'm actually quite enjoying just doing free roam and finding new areas. But it is such a 3 or 4 stage effort to complete each task. First you have to find the character to get the quest from them. Then you need to go get the blueprint. Then head to the blacksmith to make the item. Finally you can return to the character with required item. It's just such a long winded process.
Fast travel by using the map points saves a great deal of time
