I am not sure what item you are talking about. I would suggest switching to something else just to be safe. The motion tracker has more of a danger of the alien hearing it. But I am sure the flashlight can get you busted so I can't be too sure. Only advice I can give is just switch to a different item or test it out and see what happens.
One situation while playing on easy I was sitting trapped in a blind sidecorridor while the Alien walked by. I had raised the Molotov, ready to throw. The light of the fire was reflecting on the walls around but the Alien was not attracted by this.
This is not a 100% proof I am correct, but it seems not to have the effect or range of the flashlight.
He also may detect when you "flicker" (turn on/off) the flashlight, but if you have it on all the time - you're golden :)
