Hard is what they recommend, and they are right! You can change the difficulty whenever you want in Options, if for whatever reason you have to do it..
I started with normal, wanted to immerse the Alien Universe more.
you can change difficulty if it annoys you , or seems too easy on the fly

Definetly hard, no point playing this game if its not gonna be a challange and actually make you afraid of dying etc

Once you start a Nightmare difficutly it removes the option change the difficulty setting during the campaign, just and FYI

Normal your first time through so you can explore and enjoy the game more without having to worry too much. Though its still very stresfull even on normal.
Hard all the way, I haven't played it on anything less than hard though.
I'd recommend Hard. Nightmare is good if you want a challenging replay of the game, but the first time through, you're going to want access to the maps.
Play Hard all before that is easy.

Hard, it is even what the devs recommend.
why would anyone play this on normal.. its supost to be scary.. really scary.. that goes away when your playing on a nerfed version.. the best part of this game is the tense fear you have thoughout the whole game.. in my mind there is no point to exploring the map first or immersing yourself in the game without the fear.. the best part of the game

and any good game you are supodt to rage quit every once ina while.. take a break and go back

I am always playing survival horror on the highest difficulty available...(except for Outlast and its difficulty without saves lol)
But is nightmare too frustrating for that in Alien Isolation ?

Thx

Hard sounds about right for the first playthrough. When the game just came out I tried it on my friend's computer first. He already started a new campaign on Hard, so it felt very appropriate for a survival horror game. Now I got a copy on sale for myself, so It will definitely be a Nightmare mode.
Hard... I tried the easier settings after playing on hard and it felt like i was being hunted by blind pew.. at times how it didnt see me seemed laughable.
On hard/nightmare the game has no sense of humour..it becomes horror survival.

I guess one may play on easy on a later playthrough if they just want to walk around looking at the art design in detail etc. Otherwise hard all the way. If one can't handle hard that is fine, just turn it down.
