hit em with one of those then keep bashing him till he is dead, works every time... except for some reason a few of the orange jumpsuit guys seem to be immune.
and if you can make emp's, they are great. will stun them long enough for you to kill 3 or 4 with melee attacks., they have a rather short range however so lure them all to each other first.
The normal working joe can be stunned and if you are quick enough you can kill him with the wrench before he regains his senses. If you don't finish him in one go 2 to 3 bullets to the head should finish the job.
The orange working joe can't be stunned and are a lot more resilient. If you want to kill one without spending amunitions (it works even better with the normal), surprise him from behing, hit him twice with the wrench then retreat and hide. Repeat then but it takes a while.
Flame thrower is very effective too but I wouldn't spend fuel for these.
Synthetics are slow melee characters. If you don't need to stay in the same room with them and they don't directly block your path, simply run past them. They can't catch up to you.
For when you get bored of that, planted pipe bombs are a most enjoyable way to put an android in a world of yoghurt - because they patrol it is easy to plant and withdraw to a safe distance so when the creature comes out, it doesn't get you. That, and enjoy EMP mines while you can - before the synthetics learn to craft the Anorak of Doom.
Oh, and wait til you get the bolt gun, that's a lot of fun.
I agree that steath is often the best option with the droids. Avoid them altogether.
Also, they are subject to distractions too. Flares and noisemakers will work to get them out of the way for a bit.
