Flamethrower was a bad idea
Until this point the game while not being scary per say was always tense, everytime the alien was around you knew if it found you you'd be dead which put you constantly on edge especially when caught away from a hiding spot.

Since I got the flamer however its been pretty relaxed, I've had a few times where I had to hide behind a pillar and wasn't worried at all as I knew if anything happened I could just give the alien a couple of flamer bursts and all would be well, hell I've had situations where I slowly backed down a corridor giving it a tiny lick of flame now and then until I found a safe spot.

Sure thats an extreme example and fuel wont last long if you do it to often BUT still it gives you a feeling of safety you didn't have until then, and flamer fuel really isn't that uncommon either I'm finding, up to 700 only a short while after finding it and about 50 will generally scare it off or keep it at bay long enough to reach a hidey spot

The flamethrower is an instrumental part in not making the game too dragged out, and too much of the same. It tips the scales a bit, and it gives your survivability a major boost.

At a point though, you're guaranteed to almost run out of fuel. I wont say where or why, because some havent reached that far.

This is a good way of explaining it. Flamethrower was introduced at a pretty good point in the story and I liked how it switched up the gameplay.

I realise they didn't want to drag it out but if anything that could show a design flaw in the game with the flamer being a patch job. I'm not saying I have all the answers or know what would have worked better, but for me at least the sense of safety it brings ruins the tense experience

Also the first time you scare away the alien with it, you get an instant satisfactory feeling.
After a while, it gets more intense, since the alien learns how you use it. (firing in short bursts, if it's empty etc.)

At a point, all i had to do to stop the alien was to aim the flamethrower at it, it would stop dead in it's tracks and stand there trying to figure out what i did next. That only lasted a few times though, as it quickly learned that i wouldnt fire unless i had to.

Basically, give the xeno a hand, and it will take the arm. ;)

Play on hard. Ammo gets incredibly scarce so you better think twice before using the flamethrower, then. The alien doesn't hide that long on hard difficulty anymore, too.

Yeah, I was playing on hard and I had a really hard time finding any fuel at all which made the Flamethrower really a last resort. I only found fuel at some points where it is scripted that you should find fuel but besides that I found barely anything at all. I often was down to having about 100 fuel or less.
Its in the alien movie

This is a fair point as well. Flamethrower has to be in the Alien game in some form or fashion. Plus I hate defenseless games I don't think they make the game more frightening. Yea, I know you wouldn't even be defenseless without the flamethrower. But I appreciate what they did with it. Plus, use it too much and the Alien will wise up.

Im on hard and fuel isn't that scarce, then again I tend to explore every inch of the station so I've had a full inventory of items for a while and don't even think I can carry anymore ammo (not that I can see why anybody would use the gun anyway as it wont hurt the alien but will bring it down on you)

I loved when I didn't have it and then I loved to have it. I honestly never ever came even close to running out of fuel, only used it when I really needed to, always tried to avoid being detected in the first place.

It created some of the most epic moments in the game for me, like when I had the alien literally tail me in a narrow hallway and he wouldn't go back into the vents even after heavy use of the flamethrower (I think there was no vent for it to flee to nearby). I just kept him at bay, cut around a corner to break line of sight and went behind an object to hide. Then on my way back through the same corridor, the alien was blocking the door i needed to go in, so I forced him back with a couple of bursts and slipped through. That was the only time I ever dared to go toe to toe with the alien like that and only because it really needed to be done.

Only use it when you absolutely have to, don't bring it out if you don't plan on using it. I've seen people having so much trouble with the alien particularly in the later parts of the game because they think they can just blast him back into the vents whenever he's in the way, when it is always better not to engage the alien. The flamethrower really pisses him off and he will return to you quickly and never leave you alone.

So no, it's a great addition to the game. If you play well it'll be an invaluable life-saver and if you play bad it's gonna make the alien frustrate the ♥♥♥♥ out of you in no time.

problem about flamethrower is the amount of ammo and that the alien will escape after 1-2 bursts with 10-20 fuel used

you should need way more fuel on the alien so overall you will have only 2 shots with a fully loaded ft

Seems to me you're jumping to conclusions based on suspicion alone, as you haven't even completed the tenth mission yet.. Which means you only just picked it up..

Maybe you should at least finish the game before posting about how the "flamethrover was a bad idea".. Just saying
Kalvix Nov 17, 2014 @ 9:57am
I never claimed to have completed it, all I can say is since I got it I've felt super safe as theres a get out of jail free card on hand at all times while before this you had to be very carful. Hopefully everything changes and resources become incredibly scarce in the latter game but up till this point I've never had any problems with finding stuff and flamer ammo just keeps building as its very rare the alien ever catches you out anyway

Well, you've definitely just jinxed yourself completely.
