Is there a way to put away items?

Disclaimer: I realize this is an incredibly stupid question, but there it is.

I'm about thirty minutes in, and I accidentally pressed "Q". I bring up a flare, and a message that says, "Press 'R' to light" shows up as well. I cannot for the life of me deselect the flare.

I lit the first one, it went off, but Ripley went ahead and pulled out the second one.

This is obviously a minor issue, but it's breaking my immersion (as dumb as that sounds).

Is there a way to put away items after selecting them?

Apparently not until you have a weapon you can switch to. It is a minor annoyance to which I would add no shadows or reflections for player character, no jump etc.

Yeah it's a pain, but it's there.
Once you get a weapon you can equip that and it stays out of sight until you bring it up with right mouse.
Or if you have the maintenance jack, try pressing just left mouse once to swing that as melee (it does it once you have that, you don't need to equip it), and sometimes that puts away your item. But sometimes it equips the item again after the swing is finished.
You could of course light the flare, throw it and then you have nothing. You should find another flare before too long, then you can try to be more careful. I did that because I was so sick of seeing the damn thing there.

Yes once you find the revolver and have it selected you have to hold aim to see the weapon on screen, I too had this issue that drove me nuts untill you find that revolver you stuck holding items on screen. You find that gun pretty early in the game so just keep playing till then.

If you go to the main menu after recording, you will leave the item. It was a bit confusing but it worked.
