Who is Samuels?
I've made some progress with the story, and the dialogue seemed to indicate that Samuels... is a synthetic? Perhaps I misheard, but is this guy basically Data from Star Trek? I have never really gotten involved with the Alien series at all before this, so some explanation would be nice.

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for the answer. So, can androids feel fear or at least simulate it in the Alien universe?
I recommend watch Alien (1rst movie from 1979) will answer your questions most accurate.
Alright, thanks.

I would disagree a bit though, as I really liked Samuels. Especially since I expected him to be another Ash. ;-)
When the Marshal said something about him being an android, I thought I heard a bit of a surprise in Ripley's voice, so I'd like to think she didn't know it before that, but maybe I'm wrong...
If she sounded surprised I was too surprised to notice. Surprising. And I was under the impression that he was a WY executive, which is a little strange to me (that an android is a signifigant, decision-making leader), even if a local position is still relatively small in Weyland-Yutani's massive power structure.

hm, it seems I remembered that wrong, just looked it up again, she's not that surprised, so I guess one could still argue that she was if one really wants to. :D

I liked Samuels too. However, I feel like they didn't properly establish his motivations. He had relatively little screen time and a lot of that was wasted tending to that useless 3rd wheel Taylor.

I would've liked some more establishment of why he was so fond of Ripley and why he wanted to help her even if it meant his death. I feel like I skipped 2 pages on him or something.

And while I'm all for sympathetic androids (I loved Bishop, and I always endorsed the "inner turmoil" theory of Ash, where it's thought he went crazy because his ethics conflicted with his betrayal of the crew) I find it odd that the company would send an android to the station they suspected a xeno of being aboard and didn't send him special order 937.

a lot of the characters, behaviors and events in this game are just homages with little thought put behidn them.

taylor's a coward wearing cowboy boots. samuels is an obvious nod to bishop. he even looks like a young lance henrickson. with the androids, their motivation is all down to programming, so they didn't necessarily need to explore their motivations. though it would have been nice if they made it a transitional model between the flawed ash and the superior bishop. the game made samuel seem about on par with bishop.

the androids in this game were basically a disappointment. no subtlety, no insidious nature. i mean the reveal that samuels was an anroid was weak, amanda didn't even give a crap. furthermore, they should have showed samuels behaving erratically like ash to build the tension and subert player expecations when the final reveal that he's a good guy

I have a feeling that Samuels' adventures around Sevastopol might come as a DLC - which is just fine to me.

Not all androids are evil. Amanda and her friends probably don't mention that Samuel is an android because they know he is one and they don't care. In Aliens we got an android who wanted to help. The reason Ash was acting so crazily was because he didn't want to reveal he was an android and he got orders to keep it alive. Clearly the androids have free will and are put on ship mostly as utilitys. Something that doesnt require oxygen, is stronger, and can repair the ship easier, and doesnt have to go into hyper sleep. WE never really cover the ethics of androids, like if its impolite to bring up that they are androids. Do we treat them like machines and tools, or like people? If the company knows what there were xenomorphs on the colony, then why can Bishop help Ripley and the Marines? wouldnt he be actively trying to get specimens onboard the ship like Weyland Yutani wants? So Androids do seem to have at least some free will. Samuels seems happy to help Amanda, they seem like friends so why they feel the need to point out he is an android seems dumb to me. Like if he was gay, why would they need to point that out?

Since you seem uncertain I guess other might so spoiler tags, but yes. Incidentally, I took his comment that he doesn't need as much sleep as "the rest of you" as him telling us he is synthetic.

This may be because as Alien fans we're looking out for the synthetic in a new story :)

Haha, good job picking up on that.
