Do not fret, hide behind a box that you can circle around (crouched) and wait until the beast goes back to the vents. Then sneak to the door, hack it and get out of there with the elevator. Also, if you die do not alt tab out but watch the animation and try again. :)
you telling me i can circle around an object and that fools the AI?
And never run if the alien is even somewhere even remotely close. Your footsteps are like grenade blasts in terms of loudness. :)
If you have line of sight with the alien's head then it can see you. If you break line of sight (by hiding under a table, or behind a box, or in a locker) then it can not see you. It can sense something and it will look for you (it may even sniff the locker, at which point you will have to lean back and hold your breath) but it can't see you, and eventually it will get bored and go to the vents.
In the lobby area it is very simple - hide somewhere, like behind the box, and make sure you don't see the alien's head. If you see its head, it sees you. Then it goes to the vents. There are two modes that the alien has - I call them hunting and lurking (because that's what they are). In that lobby the alien is at first hunting (when it kills the goons and for a short time afterwards) and then it starts to lurk (when it goes to the vents). I'll explain how the two modes work.
Hunting - the alien is unpredictable; it will drop from the vents randomly and walk around to look for you (or other humans). It will drop from the vents if it hears a noise. The length of time it will stay out of the vents is random. It may be minutes, it may be seconds. The alien is hunting and is unpredictable.
Lurking - the alien is around but is unlikely to come down from the vents unless it hears a noise. If it hears a noise then it enters hunting mode for a while, then goes back to lurking.
Once you reach a certain level (I won't spoil it by telling you which level) the alien is basically in hunting mode for the rest of the game, but until then it's mostly just lurking.
In the lobby you're in the alien isn't fully introduced to the game yet. It's still somewhat scripted. It's supposed to kill those goons and then go back to the vents and stay there (unless it hears a noise, then it comes down again to hunt). If you just wait for it to go to the vents you should be safe to hack the elevator and progress to the next level.
there is also this little power boxes which activate different things like air purification. i cant understand those well. what is their pupose?
There's no point trying to explore the earlier stages right now - most (or all) of the doors are locked, you'll need to collect various things from later in the game to unlock them, like the blowtorch or the advanced hacking tools. Just carry on to the next level.
To lean back in a locker you simply press S on the keyboard and to hold your breath I think you have to hold right mouse (or left and right mouse together), but it only works if the alien is sniffing the vent (it tells you which buttons to press when it happens, but you have to be quick). Also don't release these buttons until the alien is gone - Amanda takes a loud breath afterwards and if the alien is still close to the vent it will hear you and rip the door off xD
As for the boxes on the wall - they control power to various parts of your level, such as lights, door access and so on. Sometimes you can switch off the air purefication to make the room smokey, which makes the alien (or humans) unable to see you. Switching off the lights will make humans less likely to see you. Switching on an alarm will make the alien run to that alarm and investigate it (giving you time to move somewhere else). Sometimes they also open doors.
You always have to switch some things off to switch others on though. It's a power relay, so you can't power up everything at the same time. Sometimes you may need to switch off lights to put power to a door or something. You can always switch off cameras for more power if you want to - cameras never help you. Unstable systems also are useless. Switching them on can make a noise to distract enemies but that's all.
Don't use these boxes too much in your strategies though. Most of the time you can just hide from the alien or throw a flare or noisemaker to distract it.
You're welcome - Hope you enjoy the game, it's awesome.
This game builds up the tension for a few hours before the alien is really unleashed on you properly.
How would you know? You have 2 hours on record. That's not even enough time for the game to begin properly.
