The answer is no but it's really not that bad. A lot of new players (myself included when I first played) feel like the save stations are too far apart but that's an illusion. You only think the save stations are 15 minutes apart because you spent 14 minutes hiding under a table in-between the two save stations. In reality they're so close that you can walk from one to the other in 30-60 seconds.
If you're playing on hard like the game suggests just go ahead and turn the difficulty down to medium - no need to restart, it can be done from the options menu during gameplay (unless you started on nightmare, in which case a restart will be required). Playing on hard for the first time only leads to situations like the one you're in now - frustrated because you keep dying and can't save wherever you like.
On medium the game is still extremely tense. The alien will spend more time in the vents, giving you more time to move (though you can't run, it'll hear you) and allowing you to use computer terminals better, but the alien will still periodically and randomly come down and walk around to search for you.
