Tips for Hard
Trying a full playthrough on hard as my first full experience because it's what the game recommends. Right now I'm trying to find the Dr's ID card after getting the code and I'm about ready to uninstall. I really want to enjoy the game but it's so stupidly obvious how the AI constantly knows where you are and tracks you. Thought I could buy myself a couple of minutes by blowing up a tank in it's face, I got less than 15 seconds before it tagged me from behind while I was walking around.

What is the actual strategy for looting and exploring new areas when the Xenomorph's AI is tucked right up your ass? Like there is nowhere I go where this thing doesn't follow 3-5 seconds behind me, if that. Am I supposed to just burn all supplies to keep it distracted every single time I want to loot a room?

Most important: Don't run. It attracts the Alien. It's intended to be part of the tension to work with the sound cues to know where it is and consider cover after cover for movement, but also trying to avoid vents from which it may drool and enemies that show up.

The Alien AI runs with 2 pointers:
#1 for your general area
#2 is it actually having to find you
It always being near you is referred to as rubberbanding, against which the unpredictable Alien mod has been created, which some users dislike (but no problem, since it's an optional mod). If you wait some time the Alien might acutally leave the area for a short time before reappearing, giving you time to roam freely and loot. If you need to be at some task undisturbed or get past a point distractions are intended to be used, or a smoke bomb in case you need to interact with something that takes time or forces you to be exposed.
But the actual game really wants you to only closely make it to cover. Avoid lockers though, they're a waste of time.

The Alien actually has the worst player detection in the game, unless on high aggression (after it got chased away or killed someone and during the late phase of the game). You'll always be safe with minimal cover. Being crouched alone makes it hiss instead of coming after you right away, giving you time to retreat back to cover.

Aaalso: You can shoot certain objects with your pistol so that they explode and set the Alien on fire, if it is close enough, causing it to flee. Many players overlook this. Since many players overlook this as well: Android eyes give away whether they're hostile (red eyes) or not, but interacting with a device you're not authorized for and them noticing that will cause them to become hostile. Also the Apollo AI tracks you with the station's cameras, which you can hit with the wrench (except for the ones with protective cover) to disable them. If they're not disabled they'll tell androids that are chasing after you where you are (or are hiding). To get rid of the flamethrower bug (fluid shaking sound) equip the flamethrower, point it at something and equip something else.

The hospital is by far the worst part of the game. The alien never seems to go up in the ceiling or give you any room to breathe.

If you can get through that part, it's much easier afterward.

The most important thing, as mentioned above, is never run. You can walk if the alien is in the ceiling or really far away; otherwise, you should be crouching. The next most important thing is keep moving and only hide if you have zero other options.

Thank you greatly for all this information. Turns out that my constant use of the motion sensor is the reason it was literally coming straight for me every second. I like how the tip tells you to use it in order to survive, but doesn't tell you the beeping noise is basically a homing beacon if it's already close

My question now is, can I move uncrouched without attracting the alien? Or is crawling the only way to move without making any noise at all?

Simply don't play it on hard in your first playthrough. It's silly, that that mode is recommended when you start a new game.

What if you move only when it is not there, and you don't run and use the doors that you can close, and the correct spots to hide.

Hard mode is not actually hard, It should be the normal mode. It gives you far too many resources and time to do things to progress. I started HARD mode when it released expecting it to be tuff, so i was too cautious, and all i did was waste time.

It actually helps to be more decisive in this game, no lingering around for long periods of time, because eventually the alien will find you when its snooping around.

Nightmare mode however is hard because it literally is on your butt nonstop and far less items around.

Walking is safe but it will react much faster to your presence if it spots you while when crouching it only hisses once before coming at you and if you get away before it does it forgets it saw you, unless on high aggression. In general you just need anything to block line of sight and can pretty much fool the Alien with it.
For someone the Alien was too easy, which is why the insane AI mod was created, see:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO2UcQYStNg

The Alien is generally deaf to all environment and object interaction noises, including NPCs running and screaming, except for explosions and weapon use, even if you just hit the wall with your wrench. As already noticed the motion spoter gives away your position when it's close. The only exception to being deaf to the environment is the server farm area when the door opens, which causes a scripted noise that it reacts to and charges at.

Other info:
You can also whack facehuggers (encountered later) with a wrench to save ammo but that sprays acide on you (costing some health).
Headshots deals extra damage.
Unless the Alien is on higher aggression or you're camping at the same spot very long it won't check areas you can crawl under, making them safe zones so long as line of sight is avoided by being there. There are also certain areas where the Alien will never move.
If the Alien attacks you inside a vent / maintenance shaft you're usually dead and it takes much longer with the flamethrower to cause it to flee.
If you happen to stand under a vent the Alien will never grab you from above if you got under it before it got to that vent position BUT once you move away it may drop right from there. Alternatively there's also the chance it'll just drop from a vent nearby and charge at you from there. Once the drooling has already started walking under such vent causes the Alien to instantly kill you.
If you cause the Alien to flee due to fire / explosives it will still kill you if you turn your back towards it while in grab range.

I don't know why people have to brag all the time on what level they played a game and the minisucle everything else.
Even "normal" is hard in this game.

You don't explore and loot when the alien is on your ass. Get in, get out as fast as possible. Noise makers are you best friend. Flares work as well as a cheep distraction.
You will circle back around to the same areas many times over to sweep for loot and explore.

Actually, if you're going for the collectables, one of the really nice things they did in your favor was let them persist through death. So if you can sprint from the save point to the id or recording or whatever, feel free. The alien will kill you, but you got what you needed, and now you can proceed with the game without worrying about picking it up again.

Huh, this game. I'm only watching a YouTube video, yet when that second chair rolled across the desk in that clip I still nearly had a heart attack. This insane mod isn't for me.

its not bragging sir, its telling it how it is. Offcourse you disagree and thats fine, but maybe im more used to old school games, maybe thats why i didnt find hard mode to be hard. Its actually been quite consistent that since i was a kid in the 90s, games in general have started to get easier.

like above somebody mentioned theres a mod that makes the AI even harder.
