Is there a recommended maximum FPS?

This is one of the games where frame generator like Lossless Scaling or AMD's control panel AFMF is very useful, you can leave the game at 60-100 FPS and then multiply it without messing up the engine or audio, and max out your display.

Frame generation isn't the same as native framerate. It's not a magic wand technology to "just double your FPS". Ghosting, artifacts, input delay, HUD distortion and screen tearing are the most known issues that may happen, and probably will.

I just played through the entire game at 120 FPS with no issues. The only thing I noticed was a little animation weirdness when dismounting ladders.

I was playing at 144 and didn't notice any issues.

I never go past 60.
There's just no point.

There's a point if you have a high refresh rate monitor. As was mentioned multiple times, 100 fps is the best choice since going beyond will create audio issues.
