Secondary Motion Detector Function?
I beat this game years ago, and came back for another spin.
When I was going to reactivate the communications SOS message, a popup briefly appeared that said something along the lines of:

"Hold Lt when using motion detector to ... "

The game has a bad habit of briefly tossing a message up, while you're in the middle of sneaking by a threat, and I didn't catch it all. Then I took the motion detector out and held Lt and nothing seems to be happening.

Anybody know what I'm on about?

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. You have to have DOF enabled for the feature to work. Alien Isolation surprised me by turning DOF, which is typically just a throwaway graphical effect, into an actual gameplay mechanic. It's pretty genius, imho.

It could be referring to showing the direction of your current objective. It's like a line around the edge of the motion tracker screen.

Yea but that doesn't require any additional input.

I thought the message was something like "Hold Lt while using Motion Detector to focus", or something.

I assumed it would hold it up to my face closer or something, but nothing is happening. Google didn't help much.

Oh that. It just focuses your vision on whats ahead of you instead of the tracker itself. Prevents tunnel vision while you have the tracker out.

The tracker is already off to my left and I can see the screen fine, and Lt does nothing. It doesn't move at all.

I am using 55 fov, as it's the wildest you can go before her body disappears.

Could that be a feature meant for minimum fov? I don't know why else it would not be working but thanks for reply.

Typically, it flips the DOF blur between your environment and the motion tracker.

Thats it! Thanks.

I have DoF turned off, so that likely explains it.

I never use it, but I'll give it a shot on this game to see. Maybe I'll turn film grain on too, for the 1979 vibes.

You'll laugh, but this very "Navpoint" is a topic here in the forum over and over and over again, precisely because people completely overlook it.

I always understood the layout of the motion tracker, but I didn't remember this one prompt from my first playthrough. Would have never sorted out that it was related to DoF, which I always turn off lol.

The first time the game told me about it, I missed it because I guess I moved too quick or something. It just prompt me again the other night in a different area with the motion detector.

I am surprised I didn't see it sooner, because it's just hitting the right mouse button to switch the blur. I don't hold the tracker out too long, so maybe that's why.

Whether it's a nexus graphics mod, or my resolution (1440p), or even FoV (55), I activated DoF to see how it would look, and the effect isn't filling the screen. I get the top 2/3 of the screen correctly displaying, and the lower third is just a black box that covers everything.

Oh well. I got the sense of what it feels like, and i still prefer DoF off anyway.

DOF is Depth Of Field and it's in the Video Options.
