No they don't. Here's a list of things that the alien CAN hear:
-Running (or walking if you're very close to it)
-Guns, including the flamethrower
-Flares, noisemakers and any other throwable object
-Anything generated by rewire boxes (alarms, unstable system, etc)
-Hitting things with the wrench
-Motion tracker, but only if the alien is like right in front of you
Here's a list of things the alien CAN NOT hear:
-Doors opening and closing
-Cutting torch
-Wrench to open door braces
-Opening and closing locker doors
-NPC humans running/talking/shouting.
-Knocking things over (like walking over cups and chairs and stuff)
Many of the above things may sound very loud in the game, especially the cutting torch, locker doors and opening door braces, but the alien can't actually hear them. The devs just made them very loud to make you think "Crap, the alien definitely heard that, now I'm scared!"
I'm especially surprised about the knocking things over part, I kinda always assumed Alien possibly hearing them was the whole reason they lay around :O
