[Concluded] Why do people find this game scary?
Don't get me wrong I love the game, but it's not really scary. I beat the game while only playing after midnight with all the lights off (for max atmosphere) and even played with headphones...but wasn't even startled. I mean, I honestly don't see whats so scary about it. (I also did play on a high difficulty)

i see, iam sorry i thought you mean its not scary at all, when i saw the first and second movie i was about 9-11, and it terrified back then and even today, it touches me more then you i guess, its about subtile things, the same sounds, the same structures in the rooms and environments, and it all comes down to the feeling to be light years in deep space, alone, on your own, vulnerable, in a sittuation every moment can be your last, befor dieying a horrible death. sorry maybe going a little to far in the wrong direction, but thats what i feel about Alien, and then there is this other disgusting side, they dont just kill you, they use us as thier host, thats what made it always disgusting for me, thats what makes it horrifiying for me. the game itself had some things that would have killed itself for me if the horror and the Alien and the whole environment wouldnt have been that good, and that the completely stupid Human AI, it is a shame to call this AI actualy, (not the only game today to tell this about for sure) but if the human AI would have been decent, it would be so much better. but anyway, maybe i just get touched more by the universe of Alien then you, but good you like the game at least, did you watch the movies already back then? but if you played it in complete dark and after midnight you have my respect, i played it in the dark too, with headphones, but i had to watch some videos befor i was able to force myself to start going through.

it's not about being "touched" I loved the story, it was compelling and tense. I just wasn't scary. I've personally never likes jump scares, irl I do get startled by a loud noise or something, but in this game they weren't very startling. It's a fun game nonetheless

Immersion is key. There should be no cat scares in the game, really, anything that seems like one is almost irrelevant to the experience, which is one of constant tension and atmosphere.

I am one of those people who is never scared by horror films, you might be the same, but where this (and Alien) shine is where you can convince yourself to suspend disbelief, which doesn't necessarily come easily. Have you tried the game in VR (which is unsupported but still very interesting)? It might be just enough of a crutch to get you "in the game".

The thing I don't think I've made very clear is that I have suspended disbelief. I felt like i was there and it was great fun, but it wasn't scary. The atmosphere was creepy and the alien was monterous, the situations were tense, but it translated into me having fun trying to complete the objective and kill the thing, not be scared of it. My mindset when in a scary situation is that being scared doesn't really help, it makes you panic and make bad decisions (something i've learned from tactical fps games) so in Alien Isolation I didn't spaz out when a train was barreling in my direction or a 7 foot alien ran around a corner, I problem solved to get myself out of that situation. As for VR, too expensive, I would LOVE a vive but the price tag is just out of my price range.

This game had potential, but IMO it falls short due to difficulty. A good horror game will want to make you scared of losing, but it won't push too hard. Amnesia for example, I died once in the entire game. In Aliens Isolation I lost 3~4 times to the android in chapter 4, until I had the perfect route lined up to save bullets and supplies. It doesn't encourage you not to lose, and it's unfair in the "chasing" area. I've died twice being sucker punched by the alien at random places. It kills the immersion and therefore the scares/terror.
I loved the game too, but it doesn't really compare to Amnesia, Silent Hills or Outlast (IMO Outlast was pretty "meh" though). Aliens Isolation is like the first Dead Space. Tense, but not really scary. It's much harder though.

Not a single mission in this game, no matter the difficulty, is unfair. If you die, it's because you messed up.

Actually, what you made very clear was that you did NOT suspend disbelief:

I certainly wasn't trying to suspend believe. "You're not supposed to keep reminding yourself that "this isn't real", but rather try and experience it as if it was" Like I said I played after dark with all the lights out hoping to be scared. The reason I wasn't scared for Ripley's life is because she is the main character...main characters in a game like this never die (for good...they always respawn) I played as myself because Ripley didn't have much of a personality, you don't see her, or her face. You just see her legs when you look down, and her arms when you hold her motion tracker thing to see if it's safe to come out of the closet. (<heh heh)

Not only did you say so in your own words, but you even provided a reason: She's the main character, and main characters "don't die".

Yea, they don't die, because you literally respawn after you die. The only people I was afraid for was the other people like Taylor. As for suspending disbeleif, I overthink things too much to %100 fool my brain into thinking it's real. Many people struggle with that aswell

Well, there you have it. I don't know why this thread reached 4 pages, but basically other people find this game scary because they suspend disbelief. You don't find it scary because you don't.

I didn't find it scary because it's not a scary game, as even Razzy stated

So you're not really interested in why people find this game as scary. Thank you for confirming that this thread was indeed some type of sad E-peen demonstration.

A sad e-peen? What?
I would like to know why others find it scary, but i don't appreciate being insulted in the process. It isn't up to me to suspend disbeleif, I shouldn't have to pretend a game is scary to enjoy it. If the game is scary, it's scary. It's not me "Not playing it right" I played in the right conditions with the right mindset. This comminity is asolutely toxic, not accepting for a second that people experienced a game differently
