Or am I just real bad at this game?

So I've tried pretty much everything after picking up the SAT tool, but I can't get past the guarding guys who come from upstairs. Died like 10 times now in a row.

I tried to go some other route before picking it up, but I only found another group of guarding dudes who killed me few times too, a floating revolver (glitched, can't pick up), and a glitched ventilation shaft near the tool which caused my character to scream in pain without taking damage and started my char to spin around in impossible speeds.

I remember watching part of a playthrough where they just hid behind the box at the top of the stairs immediately after getting the tool, and the human hostiles walked right past them. Might be worth a shot if you're having trouble. Once you get to the stairwell you're basically home-free unless you linger too long.

Many players have had problems with this one small area in the game, but once you get past it you're done! It's the only one of it's kind. Experiment with sneaking and running and you should get past them.

Pick up the tuner, look right, head up the stairs, in front of you is a doorway, hide there until 3 of the npcs walk past you, proceed along the catwalk, beware there is a fourth guy at the end, sneak past him and out the door.

I did it a bit differently (just last week).
* Pick up tuner (after grabbing stuff in middle of room)
* On the left (as you were approaching the tuner) there is a stairway up. Go up the stairs and to the right, hide around the corner until the woman comes up the stairs and walks away from you a bit and stops, while looking away (there is also an iris passage here, but the stuff in the room is unnecessary/unneeded)
* Sneak up behind the woman, bash her in the head with the maint. jack (twice). She drops the pistol, you are not allowed to pick it up (not a bug), search her
* Others will shoot at you, keep low and keep moving same direction until you reach the next 90 deg. corner (to left), peek (left) and wait until the guy moves away from the doorway ahead
* Run past full speed and head for the bulkhead door straight ahead, it will open before he shoots you
* Run downstairs, find next area where the core is that you need. You need not go back up until you get this.
* When you go back up, you will not need to worry about the other three guys any more.
