In the case of Sevastapol Station, I've always understood it was in support of bulk mining of fuel (methane, hydrogen, etc.) The corporation had a much wider agenda, however, with bio-weapons playing a large part. Sevastapol was at the time of its construction located on a major route, which helped with the costs, but when the routes changes, it became a back-water and was abandoned.

An interesting question is why so many people remained, seemingly stranded, on the station. My own opinion is that at least some chose to remain as scavengers, nomads or possibly evading the law for some reason. I saw something similar in Vietnam in early 1973, when deserters suddenly became despedrate to leave the country as the US withdrew.

Hey! Hello!? People, have you forgot about Seegson!? Did you forgot, that W-Y brought Sevastopol station only 2 days before the Torrens, with our protagonist on board, went off to Sevastopol on a mission!?And to clarify things, this means that Seegson (with the helping hand of GeoFund investors) build this station.
Why so many people were still 'living' on the station - well, that's because they didn't had enough money to buy a ticket back to home (or just were unlucky) when there was a possibility, but (!) also most of them were a part of the salvaging and decommissioning teams, since at that time (for over a year or two if I remember correctly) Sevastopol was at the state of decommissioning (before Alien arrived and W-Y brought the station).

Why did W-Y buy the station

Because they got wind of the alien on the station and they want it for their bio weapons program. It's a recurring theme throughout the saga of films.

Also by purchasing the station it allowed them to remotely take control of Apollo and the androids in order to better contain the alien and knowledge of its existence, as it would take longer to send ships to reach there (Amanda and co were already 2 days into their voyage when WY found out about the alien)

We can assume that the working joes were actually harmless right up until the time that WY took over, but were corrupted by the new operational ruleset that Apollo received from its new owners. The androids start killing more indiscriminately after Amanda succeeds in jettisoning the first alien, because WY or Apollo starts seeing people as a threat to the specimens

Exactly! Tho' people still weren't happy with Seegson androids even before they started killing people, because by that time they (Working Joes) were an old tech and they were malfunctioning quite often.
Long story short - everything went to ♥♥♥♥ even long before Aliens occured on the station (and so people were hostile to each other even before Aliens). Also, I may be biased right now, but what impressed me is that ALL of this is a part of the game, it's story - it's not us theorising all of it (at least most of it, I mean it wouldn't be really smart for devs to tell EVERYTHING) and that's good, 'cause it shows, that the story is finished, and not cut out for DLC's or simply thrown away, so that 'fans could finish it, we're doing it for the fans!!',

Weyland Yutani wants the aliens to study for biological weaponry because it'd make a killing off the right buyers. Typical megacorp arrogance and greed plot.

Weyland Yutani is aware of the xenomorph presence on Sevastopol and wants to capture live specimens to develop an alien-based bioweapons program, so they bought out Seegson Corp and gained control of the station and Apollo with his army of androids. I'm sure they expected to be able to lock down Sevastopol and contain the aliens using Apollo and the androids, but we all know how that goes.

Acording to the Devs the people remained behind becase they didn't have enough money to pay transport companies to get off.
