the ai is amazing and it really feels life a stealth game. though the alien is not there from the start, it is scary when you have it hunt you for the first time. If you want to really be scared, play it with vr
The less you die the more your fear level rises.
That only happens if the player is incapable of learning from his mistakes.
Hard is the way to go.
The AI is definitely not as good as people make it out to be, it is heavily scripted and it is similar to how your average Horror game's AI functions.
It usually consists of these scenarios.
Player either picks up an important item or triggers an objective creation/completion > AI then spawns.
AI (Alien for example) will usually linger around the players location until the Player has activated another objective trigger, then it will disappear and won't be in the vents anymore until another objective is triggered in a different area.
Also, the movement of the AI is predictable, it's always the same routes repeated.
Alien will go from Room 1 > Room 2 > Room 3 > Room 4 > Room 3 > Room 2 > Room 1 > Room 2 > Room 3 > Room 4. Repeated. Same thing when Synths are moving around the room, you'll notice that they constantly walk to the same areas, turn around and go back to the exact same place where they previously stood less than a minute ago, looking in the same direction.
Another thing that irritates me is how the Alien seems to ignore other Survivors talking and shouting to each other whilst it's in the Vents above them, yet as soon as you start running it'll jump down and try kill you? There's been a few occasions where the AI has been completely blind and not seen me.
The AI is the most overrated thing about this game, regardless it's still a great game though.
