About the canon status, I think Alien:Isolation might be canon as it's referenced by the "Alien: The Weyland-Yutani Report" guide book. Also novel "Alien: Sea of Sorrows" (which is supervised by Fox) mentions about amanda ripley too (note: I haven't read the books, just know them from the wikia).
The game in not canon; the flamethrower, molotov and pipe bombs can scare the alien away; The shotgun and bolt gun can stun it for a brief time during which you can try and find cover.
That will work on Normal difficulty but bear in mind molotovs use alot of componets...- It will work fine BUT it will be very expensive on higher difficulties
Also I find the Molotov harder to use than the Flamethrower - That might be my bindings but still Because with the flamethrower in 2 buttons you can deploy it (I do use a controller) with the Molotov its 3 buttons one to select two to raise three to throw it. Not only that but it is lit from when selected (I May have to check that but I believe it is so) which means the alien will see you from second you draw it. Not only that but you have to draw it back - You might not have time if a large angry xenomorth is charging you....:/
Practical terms the Flamethower is easier to use as well not damageing you....
Second, best tools against the alien:
Flare. If you have to go down a corridor to the left, throw one down the corridor to the right. Alien will investigate it for a while giving you time to move. Don't do it all the time because eventually the alien will figure out that you're tricking it and eventually it'll start to look at where it thinks the flare came from rather than at the flare itself (this is especially noticeable on hard and nightmare difficulties).
Smoke bomb. Useful for creating a large blind spot. I personally have never needed to use one, but it does work, I've seen it in Youtube videos. An enemy can be inside the smoke bomb area with you and won't see you. Just make sure you don't accidentally step on the alien's tail.
Flashbang does nothing against the alien, but it does make a noise when it explodes which the alien will investigate.
Pipe bomb and molotov cocktail will both make the alien retreat into the vents for a short period of time every time you use them, just make sure you don't accidentally commit suicide by throwing one too close to yourself.
Noisemaker does the same thing a flare does but the alien will investigate it for a little longer. Eventually the alien becomes aware that the noisemaker is a distraction and will ignore them.
Revolver does nothing against the alien whatsoever. Can be fired when hostile humans are around to attract the alien, who will then kill the hostile humans. Hide after firing (preferably a little away from where you fired it).
Shotgun staggers the alien a little, for a second, maybe giving you enough time to hit the emergency override on a door and hide. Only recommended as a last ditch effort to stave off death when nothing else is available.
Boltgun does the same as shotgun. Not recommended, takes time to charge the shot.
Flamethrower is your optimal alien repelling tool. Once you've flamed the alien a couple of times, merely aiming the flamethrower at the alien will make the alien recoil a little. As long as you are aiming the flamethrower at it it will walk toward you slowly, but won't charge until it gets close. You can aim the flamethrower at the alien and walk backwards, and if there is an emergency override door available you can back up through it and hit the button and hide, thus escape death and not use any precious flamethrower fuel.
The stun baton does nothing against the alien (but will kill facehuggers (though not recommended for this purpose), humans, and stun androids).
The wrench can be used to hit a wall, which makes a noise and attracts the alien. Useful for luring it to kill hostile humans. Hide after hitting the wall. Duh.
that's great, thanks for the generous reply, currently on mission 10
