Researching Gift Ideas?

How are we supposed to know what kinds of gifts particular characters like? I pay attention but I haven't seen too many hints in the dialogue so far...?

Also, what does the gift checkbox mean?

Unless you go on the wiki - by gifting and watching their reaction (they do emote based on how much they like that particular thing, plus dialog after).
Also, liked and loved gifts are getting a post on each particular character's page - e.g. March likes ores, so on his profile you will see each ore "unlocked" as you gift it.

Gift checkbox? On the characters list? Next to dialog checkbox? That's just to see that you gifted them (or not) that particular day. There aren't any restrictions otherwise - jsut one gift a day.

No, that makes sense! I've never gotten into games like this before (kept bouncing off of Stardew) so I wasn't sure what to expect.
