What's the benefit (if any) to playing this via steam, instead of the direct client from WOTC?

The same reason for any game on Steam. Consolidating your games onto a single platform, automatic updates in the background, ability to pay with steam cash, etc. Otherwise, no reason to switch.

Considering my version of Arena is Sloppy as hell, i'll welcome auto-updates.
I've read on reddit that some people had 4 installed versions of the game, and after uninstalling and reinstalling it behaved much smoother.
In any way, you can enjoy every other steam benefits, discussions, tracking of time played etc, etc.

Is this going to run on linux versions of Steam?

As it is right now there's really no "benefit" to playing on Steam compared to the original client.

I'll be switching over steam because I use this as my primary gaming client. Other MTG games on Steam have cards and achievements so I'm guessing this will as well.

I'm really curious as to how it will perform on Steam compared to the original client. I tried it on the EGS when it launched there and it was a lot of delays on different things. Hopefully MTG Arena will have a good launch on Steam.

There's also the additional community aspect, of which we all are participating in right now. Many good reasons for people to have waited for a steam release.
automatic updates, so I don't have to sit at the install screen every time I launch it
epic launcher pulls cpu power for no reason so theres one

None. It's all the same. In fact, to prove how indifferent it is, I have installed onto Steam having played for a year on Epic and upon launch, it remembers all my settings. It's just a client portal. Once you load the game, you're in the same place no matter where you launched it from.

Arena has been available standalone long before it came to Epic. Still is.

I'm hesitant about the community point. The MTG community is pretty awful most of the time :(

MTGA not having built in global chat with strangers actually makes MTG bearable against random opponents lol.

I'm not talking about ingame chat, just the steam community features.

Yeah the MTG community leaking into the steam discussion forms for this game will not be a pretty sight.

As long as they don't start posting about politics, , or accuse WOTC of promoting politics or an agenda they don't like, it can't be that bad. I've seen a few do it, but thankfully not more than that.
