Is this game a masterpiece? No, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. It's a decent indie game, far better than the typical trash releasing on Steam nowadays. The introduction to the story, Skelethrone: The Prey, has been available as a free download on Steam for several months now. This free prequel to the main game sets the scene for the events that will unfold over the course of the main campaign.

The story is set in the dark fantasy realm of Makh-Abyss. We take on the role of a skeleton who is suddenly resurrected. We were once Lord Derek Ericona, but that was a long time ago. At the start of the game, we rise from a pile of human remains and should quickly get ourselves some equipment. A weapon wouldn't be a bad idea; shield, armor, helmet and shoes also improve our character stats and make it easier for us to stay alive a little longer. Fortunately, the whole area is surrounded by decaying corpses and we quickly find a few rotten and rusty pieces of armor and weapons. And of course we need this equipment, because the area is also haunted by some nightmarish monsters that attack us immediately on sight. And fighting these creatures is also the core gameplay mechanic of the game. Striking with the sword, a dodge roll forwards or backwards, parrying attacks at the perfect moment with our shield and then carrying out particularly effective counter-attacks, while always keeping an eye on our stamina. The battles are reminiscent of a Dark Souls clone, but of course in pure 2D.

It is a classic 2D side-scrolling action game that is mainly based on the classic Metroidvanias and has added a few role-playing elements. You have to explore the world, kill monsters, fight bosses, climb and jump, find hidden areas and improve your character. With special abilities that you only learn during the game, you can reach previously inaccessible places. Go exploring in the vast game areas; the game will reward you for it. You can find a variety of equipment that will significantly improve your hero. An overview map makes it easier to find your way around, while quick travel portals (campfires) allow you to navigate through the game world more quickly. An extensive talent tree allows you to improve your hero over the course of the game (skills can be reallocated once you have received the Oblivion Stone), and special skills can be learned at certain points in the game. There are a total of five character values that change over the course of the game. If you lose a life, you can return to the place of death and get back the essence (a type of currency that you obtain by defeating enemies) lying around there, otherwise the essence you have collected since the last save is gone. However, the items you have found remain in your inventory, which means that dying is not punished so severely.

Conclusion:
The game is fun, but also quite a challenge. Once you get used to the controls, however, you get a classic Metroidvania with 16-bit graphics and a fantasy setting with strong Dark Souls vibes. The gameplay feels good, the battles are satisfying and the bosses are challenging - just as it should be. Objectively speaking, the difficulty level is quite manageable if you don't have two left hands. The bottom line is that this is an exciting 2D Metroidvania focused on combat - and there can never be too many of those.

Everything in this game is excellent.

I've had way more fun with this game than every other Metroidvania Souls-like. Between the subtle references, (and the obvious ones), the awesome environments and music, the awesome boss designs, multiple choices and endings - this game gets a 9/10 from me. (If it weren't for Mycelium and one bad main boss much later in the game this would be a 10.)

I bought it two days ago and you can see how many hours I went from within the timeframe of then to this review. Absolute crown jewel of a game.

I wish the developer would make a expansion for it or a sequel, but unfortunately the game never seemed to pick up steam so I don't think it's going to happen.

Just beat this game.
Man, the backbone of this game is so solid , with a hefty 24~ hrs-ish solid experience with some challenging boss fight and interesting biome.
Deep down i really like the world/ exploration / boss fight of this game.
However, there's so many things that prevent this game from being truly great, and also a hard recommendation for most normal players.

Early game experience just feel trash overall, making me almost rage-quit the game for that devourer queen boss. (Glad i didnt though. Past that everything becomes fairer)
Early game gives you so little resources yet the bonefire are like miles apart. Top it with janky hitbox and some mobs having unfair infinite combo/animation with no telegraph, it could potentially drive away many players early game. The early area mobs balancing is pretty terrible too (some has higher hp / atk/ faster combo than mobs in way later area, which makes zero sense)
I died a total of 148 times throughout my playthrouh, and i can tell you the first 100~ deaths are all pre Frog boss/ Devourer Queen. And frog boss and devourer queen alone contributes to like 70 deaths alone, whereas all the later bosses i beat it in 1~10 tries
Fortunately , the dev comes to his sense later on with better bosses/ mob balancing, plus you start getting more healing potions/ better weapons.

Then it comes to one greatest downside of this game -> no upgradable weapon.
Yes, if the weapon is trash, it's pretty much trash for the entire playthrough and nothing can save it, whether you love the weapon or not.
You are pretty much stuck with the highest damage weapon available to you (which in my case , scythe is objectively the best weapon for my 2-h dodge playstyle)
Plus bosses difficulty goes down so much after i start maining scythe and transform all the ether talent to stamina/ hp since this game gives you such limited method to regain mana
This pretty much kills the versatility of this game.

Also the stat system is balanced poorly too. So many weapons just require ridiculous stat investment, and those stat you put in Soul/ Dex don't buff the damage on those weapons that ask for insane stat requirement either(mainly 15 soul) = wasted stat. It just means that you can pretty much ignore all those insane soul required weapon and focus on the str/ dex ones because then you can pump all the points into str to buff the damage to highest.
Vit is kinda underwhelming . Only Endurance feels balanced, since almost all your def/resistance is tied with your equipment , and putting on right equipment is crucial to the success of this game, unlike most other Souls games.

Also considering you cant upgrade weapon = dev want you to try different weapons, why no knowledge tree respec system at all?
You are pretty much stuck with the weapon type you choose since there's limited amount of knowledge points throughout the playthrough, and there's no NG+.

Also why the temporary checkpoint = lantern does not save your game spot, nor does it refill your healing potion?
This game has very very few bonefire point, so you're pretty much stuck playing the game for long duration until you find another bonefire.
Not refilling healing potion after long tedious exploration pretty much just encourage you to suicide near a lantern to refill your potion before you progress further = waste of time/ bloating death count. It should have just refill your potion when you touch it, and also should have serve as a checkpoint after you leave and come back from the game.

If the above issues can be addressed, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game to other people.

This game is a must buy if you’re a fan of souls-like metroidvanias. The three different difficulties enable you to choose how much hand-holding you want during your playthrough experience. I went through my first playthrough on the harder difficulty and had over 300 deaths, while playing on Story mode my second time through to get the other ending netted me just 5 deaths. This game was made by a solo developer, and its mind blowing how much is in this game. There is a variety of weapons to use, a skill tree that feels impactful, a well-designed map with a ton of beautiful areas, a plethora of NPCs with their own roles in the story, a crazy number of bosses, and two different endings to discover. I did encounter a few of bugs during my two playthroughs, but the dev has already fixed some and is constantly working on eliminating the others to have this game as polished as can be. I’m a huge fan of the art style and the music helps take the game to another level. Two huge positives for me are the combat mechanics and the traversal abilities that make not only fighting enemies’ fun, but dodging all the elemental dangers as well. Had a blast playing this one, definitely going to have to do another run on my Steam Deck now!

Decent art style with way too much clutter on foreground and clunky animations.
Sluggish controls and a tiny stamina bar with slow recovery.
Bosses take 1000 hits and surprise smack you with 0 windup.
Early game levels take forever and you can't reset skill tree so you'll have to decide weapon type pretty early.
Bonfires disgustingly far from each other and "homeward bone" has a 10 minute cooldown.

Heavy Dark Souls feel to the game. While the screenshots might not look the prettiest, the sound+music combine well with the art to make the world far more immersive than I'd anticipated. It plays and feels a lot like The Last Faith in particular, but not as good. It's far less polished (I experienced a number of crashes) and a much less gripping experience all-round.

The map doesn't show your characters position in a room, nor does it show any of the rooms layout/geometry. It does however show all exit/entrances and how they all connect to one another. It's a little tricky to see these connections and I find myself zooming in on the map screen every time that I want to look at it. I wish the 'zoomed in' version was the default.

Different biomes/areas are in different colours. The map doesn't mark missed collectables and you cannot place your own map markers.

While the game is a metroidvania and has multiple paths to explore, it's still quite confined. Whenever I gained a new ability there was only 1-3 places to backtrack too with my new power.

At first, it seemed to me like a key component of combat was blocking/parrying but it became clear that you don't need to go this route at all and instead can jump in/out of harms way as well as dodge roll. Your dodge roll has i-frames and there is no contact damage. Combat starts out quite difficult when you have nothing, similar to the early moments of the first Blasphemous game. And like that game, everything here is mostly down to learning each enemies attack patterns.

You can spec into different stats, choose from some different weapons like a bow, 2 hander, sword & board etc. There is no magic.

You have corpse runs where you can lose all of your souls (souls are used to level up at bonfires which also serve as teleport locations).

There's plenty of long gauntlets between checkpoints. The game doesn't respawn all of the enemies on a corpse run, but even with this it can be quite an arduous trip going anywhere. Some enemies can take a while to kill, to the point that it felt better to run past them.

I quit Skelethrone right near the end before finishing. The game continually serves you these long repetitive gauntlets: corridors full of enemies and it just kind of wore me down to the point that I didn't care any longer. It just became kind of arduous and rarely rewarding. I was quite hooked on the game for the first 2/3 of it though. It's certainly worth a look if you've played most of the other notable soulslike metroidvanias already.

Really wanted to like this game but it's such an amateurish attempt at being 2d dark souls meets symphony of the night that it fails in every single aspect of it's mechanics. The world it self is ok. Not bad but not good either. The art style is decent enough with some good looking and interesting characters but there's simply too much junk in the foreground that's hiding tiny enemies or pits that while they don't hit for much, can and will knock you off a ladder and into your death. Enemy design is creative enough but animated badly. Windups are either too fast or don't exist and bosses are little more than damage sponges easily conquered by jumping and attacking with a two handed weapon. Speaking of weapons, two handed ones are the only way you will enjoy the game. Ranged is trash, swords are fast but do pathetic amounts of damage while requiring you to be close to the enemy to hit them. Great swords offer better damage and a range advantage that makes the game slightly less of a chore to play. Not to mention you can't mark anything in the map so if you forgot something in an are you didn't explore, too bad. You have to either write it down or try guessing at where the hell you're supposed to go for that gem or piece of equipment you might have forgotten. The map wont even tell you your positioning either, just a vague idea like this was symphony is the night from wish.

Combat is dull and unbalanced. Forcing you to play two handed weapons if you plan to beat even regular mobs in any reasonable time and even then the weapon only really has one attack that swings once every two business days and consumes most of your pathetic amount of stamina. Devolving into a jump + attack to circumvent the slow nature of the weapon while giving you mobility without needing to roll. I guess you could try other weapons but the stat increase is minimal and the cost of leveling up is obscene. Enemies give a pathetic amount of points per kill and the requirements will quickly spiral out of control. The game is so afraid of giving the player the slightest bit of convenience that it slaps a 500+ second cool down to the item that returns you to the bonfires. Why? why does it force me to either die and re spawn because it's faster or tab out and watch youtube for a while until the cool down is over. Why does everything have to be a challenge?

On that note the game spreads said bonfires VERY far from each other and gives you these lanterns that don't save your progress but act like checkpoints if you die. Why not just place another bonfire there and save your self the effort? Because the developer either didn't have play testers or was dead set in making the game a chore to play for anyone brave enough to try it. This game has boss run backs that make dark souls 2 blush. There's a thousand little things that make it a chore to play and simply i can't recommend this game to anyone. Everything it does, other games do better. I truly wanted to like it but it's a chore to play and does not respect the player's time.

After playing this game for close to 10 hours, I'm fed up with how the game works. This is based on the original, Dev Intended, difficulty. The game isn't good enough for me to restart the game on easy to make more progress,

First and foremost, the game has some major issues with bugs, most of which won't block your progress, but they will make you reset the game, and since you can only save in a few places, you're likely to lose a lot of time.

Now, onto the more major issues I have with this game: The controls feel terrible. Some of this is because this game is trying to do Dark Souls in that you can't cancel out of animations, the issue is that each animation has a short start-up and end-time animation where nothing is happening, but you can't input anything during this time, which leads to a lot of dropped inputs which feels really bad. Along with that, even when the controls are working they don't feel very good. I don't know what specifics make it feel a little janky, but you'll intuitively feel that the game isn't working the way you think it should.

The actual combat is very lack luster, you have 5 options to work with: basic attacks, special attacks, dodging, parrying, and blocking. Each weapon has a three hit combo, but most enemies will receive I-frames after the first hit, making the subsequent hits miss. Not all weapons have special attacks, but most of them are fairly basic extra damage moves. Dodging gives you a lot of i-frames, but makes hitting enemies very difficult as you more really far. Blocking is fairly pointless as you'll still take damage as well as losing stamina, but the enemy doesn't ever get deflected from it. Parrying is relatively easy and it prevents all damage, but you'll often get hit if the enemy has a combo. If you attack after parrying, you'll do an extra damaging attack, but it locks you in place for so long that most enemies will punish you for using it.

Now, even if the combat felt great, the enemies don't feel particularly good to deal with. Most enemies will ignore hits and continue attacking you, so you have to constantly wait for an opening rather than getting in multiple hits, and some enemies have virtually no openings.

The game is also almost a boss rush game with how many bosses you face and how frequently they are pitted against you back to back, but each boss only has about 5 attacks that you have to deal with. Unluckily, the bosses are tuned so high that those 5 attacks will be killing you constantly. This might be forgivable if the bosses had great designs, but they don't, and most bosses end up feeling very samey. Every boss I fought mostly used the same 2 hit combo against me. I finally got fed up with the bosses when the game pit me against two bosses at the same time, each with completely indipendant AI (so no combined attacks, working together, friendly fire, or combined openings) One swings a club wildly while the other casts spells at you, all of which home in on you. Because of the afore mentioned combat issues, it really felt like luck when it came to having openings to do damage, and if I could even dodge damage. There were times in the fight where dodging one attack put me in direct line of another attack (started after I began my dodge) and because of the "recovery" frames on the animation I couldn't avoid this new attack.

Now, if the game allowed for some difficulty mitigation, this all wouldn't be so bad, but the way the RPG elements work in the game make it a real slog to make any progress and the progress you make is marginal at best. It takes an enormous amount of "souls" to level up, but only two of the leveling options do anything more than allow you to use specific weapons (there is no weapon scaling, you can either use a weapon or you can't and the damage doesn't change), health and stamina are the only options that give you direct bonuses, but these bonuses are very small as well. The game also allows you to pick up special items that let you earn skills on a talent board, but these just give you minor direct stat increases (plus 2 health, plus 2 stamina, plus 2 weapon damage with a specific weapon type) but these items are mostly tied into the metroidvania style skills you unlock and you don't get very many in the game.

all these things combined mean that you really can't do much to improve you odds of success unless you want to sit and grind for hours (the EXP you receive from normal enemies is miniscule)

I've played a lot of games that ape the from soft difficulty formulae, but this just doesn't feel good to play. Combine that with lack luster bosses, poor controls, poor translation, few options, and inconsistent art, I really recommend playing something else. There's a reason so many of the trophies in this game have low percentages, and it's not just because the game is difficult.

After playing skelethrone the prey, this game's prologue/free demo, i was rather excited to play the full game. As the prey had impressed me with overal responsiveness of controls and perfect difficulty. The gritty artstyle, exciting music and overal mood of the game set the stage for another great soulslike MV experience but unfortunately the full game didn't leave as good of an impression on me. However the same responsive controls are very much still here and even better. With combat that plays very well from your end, as rolling, dashing and slashing just feels great. Why then was i not as impressed? Mainly the enemy side of things was rough, with windups and overal difficulty that leaned way more into the unfair side as opposed to prey's fair challenge.

Because of my great experience with the prey i opted to go with the regular (hard) difficulty for the chronicles. Something which was fine for the most part except for some major roadblocks in terms of a select few bosses and some truly frustrating enemies. In fact i did not beat the game proper, giving up at the penultimate boss as i had explored the full map (the next/final boss was pretty much the room after this one). I'm glad i called it quits here though as i left the game on a positive note this way. Rather than bashing my head against a boss that has near instant attacks with barely any windup. This is something most bosses and enemies suffer from but not to this degree.

It's things like this that make the game feel unfair and detract from an otherwise great soulslike experience. Just a tad longer windups or better telegraps would have gone a long way to making this game a truly enjoyable experience. Because the enemies have cool designs and unique attacks, both the bosses and regular fodder. In fact i was thoroughly impressed with the sheer amount of different enemies and bosses to fight especially given that this game was made by a singular developer. In terms of overal polish, amount of content and gameplay this is just incredible for one person's achievement. However some more playtesters could have alleviated the painpoints and balance issues.

Like i said some bosses were harder while others were cheesable or easy. There was one duo boss which took me well over an hour, and is the bane of most players judging by reviews/steam discussions. However there's a few other frustrating ones too, among which another duo fight as they stacked attacks rather than follow up. One final thing that irked me a lot was how many enemies and bosses ran away from you during combat. Not just the ranged ones but melee too, in some cases it felt like you spent half your time running after the boss which is something i haven't experienced in a soulslike. Still though the overal feeling of combat leans more on the fun side and if you're up for the challenge then i would also recommend the regular difficulty for the best experience.

With combat being pretty much the focus of the game, given the soulslike nature, will determine wether or not you like the game. But there's other things to consider too, especially on the metroidvania side of things. In terms of level design there's not really much going on with mostly very basic platforming which is still enjoyable due to the very responsive controls. The map is not very interconnected and mostly linear but there's some side paths and sequence breaking you can do before you hit a roadblock. The exploration is pretty rewarding though as there's tons of things to find to help you in combat. From small incremental stat increases to eventual flask upgrades and weapons or gear.

The weapons especially are exciting as they each feature 2 unique skills that use a special bar. There's a suprising variety in these and each feels great to use. I experimented more than i do in other games because they felt so fun to use. I do feel like they could scale a bit better, and i would have loved for a blacksmith or something similar to upgrade your favorite gear. The progression in general feels rather slow as it is incremental in slow bits but the difference over time does add up. Some of this gear or other collectibles are pretty obvious to spot but others are hidden in very obscure places. The thing is though that the enviroments are sometimes hard to read. The walls all look alike and they can be a doorway, secret or just a plain old wall.

Doorways in general are poorly telegraphed so i had to rely on my map to see if i could take a turn or not. The game has some issues in regards to readability with some foreground elements obscuring things like items or worse, enemies. However I always had enough room to shift the fight to somewhere i could see. Speaking of which the visuals were great, i really liked the art design for skelethrone. I've heard some people call it ugly but i'd summarize it as gritty. The world feels raw and bleak .The designs for enemies and the characters is also quite cool, nothing too fancy but still unique and distinct. It does feel a bit random though as there's a lack of consistency between characters with each seemingly having been made to just look cool, which they certainly do.

What's also cool or rather, epic, is the music, it suprised me with both its quality and its quantity. From exhilirating boss themes to melancholic strings in the darkest of depths. I picked up the OST with my purchase and i'm glad i did, however i can't say the same about the art book as it's mostly just sprites from the game laid out in a basic manner with a name and no explanation. In fact the game barely explains anything thats going on. There's much less exposition in this game than the prologue and when things start picking up some more near the end the writing takes a nose dive towards the cringe zone.

Things like "i'm tired of this ♥♥♥♥" or calling eachother "idiots" are not out of the question here and it really pulled me out of the experience. You should not play skelethrone for its narrative but rather for its combat and atmosphere, two things it mostly does well. What it also does well is run well, not all too suprising for a pixel art sidescroller but still it's important and skelethrone does it proper. Load times are also very fast and file size is well optimized thanks to the accomplishments of the solo developer. Again this person knows what they're doing as the game is good technically, feels good to play, has great music and visuals. Given all this the balancing issues and bad story can be forgiven, which is why i'm giving it a thumbs up.

Many have said that before me, but...its essentially 2D Souls, with good art and solid difficulty.

This is just an awesome platformer. Here we run as a knight, destroying enemies in locations. And often they will be much stronger than us, but still, like a berserker, our hero is ready to smash them with his sword.
