Plenty of players aren't struggling, and plenty more are thriving, and even plenty more are so bored, they're generous enough to just give out stuff and help others.
Neither is needed to survive.
Water is needed for sprint speed.
I have been ignoring food for the last 2-3 scenarios.
Dont build your base near chaosweaver spawn points.
They will increase or decrease the temperature by alot.
Don't chase the meta. I have a friend who chose to build on top of a lava pool just because it is near a thermal tower and in pollution area. His rationale was just to power his generators to make acid. The issue was teleporting back to base often spawn the character in lava and the character can't get full hp in base. He had to sleep in other people's base.
So, if you are picking a location where the temperature is just not what you can currently deal with, consider moving.
2. Do the necessary:
A lot of people jump into Way of Winter with the exact same expectation of playing Manibus. In Manibus, making food is optional, but All Weather Stew is a must in Way of Winter in later phases. Farming also become somewhat mandatory if you want a steady supply of ingredients unless you build at the right places.
Similarly, a lot of people just straight up ignore the skins. Your top and pants need to have the right skins to survive. You can see which skins give cold and hot resist but generally, bear (cold) and crocodile (hot) are good. Both animals can be found in Wishland Amusement Park's zoo and river safari.
Don't forget heatium and coldium as well if you are just starting out. Chaosium lantern also helps a bit.
3. UI confusion:
The UI for temperature mechanic is not very well designed but in general, there are 3 UIs:
(a) Ambient temperature meter (under mini map): your resistance will increase the size of the white zone. You want to keep the arrow in the white zone. The arrow reflects the ambient temperature.
(b) Thermometer (above HP bar): It will basically give indication of whether your body temperature is going up or down. Ideally, if you are always in the white zone, you should not see this.
(c) Body shape (above HP bar): If you see this, you are either too cold or too hot. There is a slight problem with this UI and it is that when you are in base, you can be in a too cold or too hot state and you will not take damage. However, if you leave your territory, it takes time for the body temperature to adjust and/or the area you are in could be outside the white zone.
This is potentially one reason why you suddenly lose hp and die after leaving base. So, double-check if the body shape is appearing. If your character has healthy body temperature, it should not appear. Again, this ties back to point 1 on your base location.
I'm not sure of the exact figures but 50 cold/heat resist allowed me to run around in -35C or +85C without worries respectively. There are areas where you will need to stack your resistances to survive.
Being anywhere other than keeping temperature firmly in the white zone is pretty much death. The timer is just too short to do anything meaningful like running outside to collect resources and causes negative effects similar to corruption which compounds the issue. Early game heat sources are inconsistent and unreliable so most of early game is spent hugging your campsite and doing brief 5 minute excursions as anything longer than this leads to debuffs that can lead to unpreventable (early game) death. This makes things just not fun for anyone.
Temperature swings (even without CW effects) are too severe. Instead of making certain areas of the map require higher resistance, it was made where everywhere just simply sucks until you have enough stuff to make temperature no longer matter. This discourages exploration so the game map feels less interesting since people only go to the large POIs instead of realizing that some of those minor and unmarked structures have stuff too.
It's not that the temperature system is hard once you have gear and buffs to negate it... It's that none of it is fun. It doesn't add anything to the playing experience while adding an additional layer of hindrance to players wanting to do things in the game.
The campsite (placed with T) helps.
So, carry some logs and gravel, and if you are too cold, being at the campsite helps.
Ultimately, best option is head to the zoo in Wishland East and get some bear skin. Make top and pants with it and your problem will be solved until later phase.
