Taming Animals is Borderline Useless ...
Please read the entire post before making a comment. Thank you <3

Animal Taming is totally useless at this point in time, and let me tell you why.

This system is broken, or just poorly designed, cuz i cant believe that is how it suppose to be. In order to catch and animal (Deer, Bear, Rabbit, Boar, Wolf and Crocodile and their respective gender and stage types) [With Crocks begin mostly broken and need a specific place to be found at] You HAVE TO get all the skills so thats 14 Memetic points, then you have to craft a feeder which is 50 logs 12 bricks 15 ALUMINUM and 15 adhesive for at least one of them, and then you have to craft MANY Tranqs, each costing 3 steel 8 plastic 5 RUBBER and 3 STARDUST ... EACH!

Then you have to hunt, and lets say you were lucky and found S-Tier animal using only 5 tranqs (THROWABLE TRANQS ARE THE WORST IDEA EVER, try to hit a rabbit with that) You just spend alot of rubber, some steel and STARDUST!
Why Stardust ???
Dont know ...

Now its time to raise it, well if its an aggressive one, there is and added cost of keeping him locked and repair of all he will attack ...

Then you spent food, water and TIME to raise it. I'm not even gonna start on half of the fav foods of animals begin bugged right now... After ALOT of hours, the animal has unlocked some perks
"Small chance for acid from Hunting Animals" - NICE
"Moderate chance to obtain a rare meat from Hunting Animals" - NICE
What the game does NOT tell you is that, these are the bonuses you'll get FOR THAT SPECIFIC ANIMAL, THE ONE YOU SPENT ALL THESE TIME AND MATERIALS AND FOOD TO RAISE ... (Wild animals, or not even the other ones that you butcher in your territory will give you this bonus stuff)

I hope this is a bug, i cannot believe the Devs would think that this exchange, all that i just tolled you, all of that for few PRISTINE MEAT 1-4 would be Worth it.

I'm gonna be honest here, if you are doing it for the fun, sure go for it, having a bear or a Wolf at the base is cool, and if that is fun for you, Do it and have fun with it 100% :)

But for others, that want some kind of the profit from it, its borderline useless mechanic...
Maybe if you want milk, then Doe and Goat can do something for you. Other then that... Why ?

HOW TO FIX IT ?!
i see 3 ways to make it better and playable :
1. Make animals produce ALL of the bonus food/hide/acid, without a need to kill them.
2. Make the "Hunting Animals" bonuses apply to wild animals ( I still want to believe that this was the idea but now its bugged)
3. When applying the breeding system, make sure that the animals that we breed will be worth it, i dont know, give them some nice passive income mechanic, or make them a way to get a new deviant i dont know just make it worth it.

Thanks for reading this, and if you want a CIVIL conversation in the comments and feel like i was too harsh and left something out, let me know :)

TL:DR Ranching sim is Deviation farming with fewer perks.

You didn't need to explain it. Everyone knows.

the resources arent that bad. i made so much ammo with similar resources
BurlsoL Aug 17, 2024 @ 7:40pm
Yep. Nothing but a time and resource sink that doesn't give you anything meaningful in the end.

Really want to take one of my wolves or one of my bears out on a hunt. Make each whistle one time use, and call the pet to your side for 10-20 minutes, and bump up the resource cost of it to balance it. Let me select the pet that gets summoned from a radial menu. Apply the pet hunting buffs to the pet and owner while the pet is out. Or in the case of combat buffs to just the pet maybe. My wolf procing power surge and getting an atk bonus during a thunderstorm is so situational as to be useless for just base defense, but if I could summon it out in the wild while raiding a base? That could be a lot of fun if it was raining. My bear that has 45K HP being able to invuln for 5 seconds when it gets down to 30% health...not really a big deal for base defense, but out raiding something, could be a lot of fun. For balance, turn off deviants while the pet is out.

Probably the best way to make the ranch relevant and worth the trouble/cost would be to add some new canned food recipes in the game, that use materials from your ranch only.
Canned meat is the best food just because it never spoils, its easy to get, and if you have the rabbit, he just brings you meat passively. Everything else you craft if you have a situation like mining, farming acid. Otherwise not worth it because it spoils.

My 2 goats each give 1! Milk in 9 hours. When I consider the effort and time involved in feeding, I prefer to go milk farming, it brings more in the shortest amount of time. Btw, goat meat is now available cheaply! :cozydarkseer:

I got a grade A wolf with first dart I threw. I hope it gives more meat than the rabbit, or atleast the same amount.

I always think that taming is useless from day one. It is a strategy design for player time sinking. However, there is no any good reason for player to invest their time for such a short life-cycle spin game. This game have too much expected long term activities. let player accumulate all those suppose to be last longer visual property. 6 weeks is just mere we get our salary once. That maybe a problem for them to sell more lucrative stuff. They have some value pack, beside battle pass. But how to convince everyone to buy it for every 30 days renew? 6 weeks" they hit a stone on their feet.

I dont get point about material cost. Its really dirty cheap, even with stardust. Or you just new and never spent thousands of stardust for upgrading weapons (weapon calibration +9-10 require 500-600 stardust each) or for making explosive ammo.

Meanwhile its still just farming in different clothes. 90% of resources that you dont need and cant use and 10% "deviated" pristine one, that could be used in top level food. But to get it you need really big rancho and time.
On short scenarios it just hillarious. (not the worst ones, i still remember cheesemaking in H&H, when you need real month to get camembert like cheese)

I'm part of the group on discord that organise, prepare and do the prime wars and manibus for the entire server. So we spent THOUSANDS of Steel and bricks for the bunkers, even more stardust and fuel for red plasma, bios and cannons, and dont even get me started on tungsten ... So yeah when you are doing such a big thing every day for 15-20 prime wars a day in which 2-4 are Nightmare. Even this little stardust is a problem. TRUST ME xD
And just a quick tip, NEVER make AP Ammo, its just not worth the cost for 2-3% more dmg.

But mostly these resources i wrote about are just to make a point, that you spent so much (Even not needed ones) for something that doesnt give you anything worth it xD

And all the "Premium Food"its used for, its not even need for the most part, you get enough dmg boost fro canned foods, and brewing corn will give you sanity beer. Thats all you need for late game. But yeah i can see your point as well and thanks for sharing ;)

Taming is pointless unless you somehow know all the tricks to get it to work. I assume there are such "tricks".

Don't forget the fun of trying to fill the trough with food and water while being attacked. You can't put the trough on the edge of the containment pen or the animals can glitch to escape.

Don't forget the fun of farming meat for 30 minutes to an hour for carnivores to have it all spoil overnight, barely touched.

Don't forget how great it is that after 10+ hours tameness on one of my wolves is 4% and the other is 5%. At this rate, the reset will happen before the wolves are tame.

For a game that is based on 6 week cycles, this juice is not worth the squeeze. I do not want a time consuming mini game of "keep raw meat in the trough". They don't eat it anyway. It just spoils. Giving them their favorite food doesn't do anything worthwhile anyway. 4-5% in over 10 hours is just dumb. I wanted to do it as another thing to do in the game. It's not really any fun.

It will be interesting to see how many people hang around after the reset. Over 10 million downloads worldwide. I'm not making any predictions on what the percentage of people playing will drop. I personally feel it will be by a lot, but only time will tell.

You can bring pets over from what I was told that is why i am working on class s bears to roam my territory.

The nutcracker shot my wolf, but waited until I was watching to do so. It won't defend my base during purifications but will shoot my animals. It is true to its name. :steamsalty:

Pretty sure they ninja-nerfed how much rawhide you get from animals in the wilds too.
i'd get 1, 2 maybe 3 before the patch.
Now it's consistently 1 and if I'm VERY lucky, 2.

Got a sneaking suspicion it's part of trying to coax you into farming.
I'm good, no thanks.
I'd rather do it the "hard way".
