ELITE BREEDERS HELP!!!

I have lots of colored rares now. I bred two turtles with the exact same pattern and of course got offspring with that exact pattern, but NOT WITH EVERY BREED. sometimes it was a non rare offspring. Is this the same with breeding a rare animal with a non rare? I hate to waste breeds breeding two rares together for a failed result if I have the exact same chances breeding a rare and a non rare. Anyone have some insight on breeding two rares VS. breeding ONE rare and a non rare?
