Once Human

Once Human

A beginner's review of the game
I have 30 hours of play in Once Human. Here's what I found so far:

First, the art and scenery is beautiful. It really looks like a post-apocalyptic planet. There's a large variety of character models to choose from. Character customization is expansive, but I honestly couldn't see much of a difference in appearance even flipping the slider bars back and forth. Probably more subtle than I really care about, but I can see how folks might dig this part. The start up story is engaging. The combat is easy to learn (thankfully); but, i suspect, will be hard to master. Close up melee is fast and the viewpoint changes frantically - so that means exciting - but I prefer taking shots at enemies far away. I selected the crossbow as the initial weapon of choice because the arrows can be recovered and reused (which I figured would be useful in a post-A scenario). Wandering around scavenging stuff has netted me more gun ammo than I could use.

There are plenty of resources available through mining and logging trees, fruit on the ground, animals to hunt (those deer run mighty fast if they spot you, so a long distance weapon is necessary to hunt deer meat and hides). Base building is absolutely necessary to turn the resources into stuff you can use. The deviants are easy to find and catch and use (build a box for each of them on your base).

The missions range from simple to very complex. Its a good thing that each new area you explore has a set of sub-goals to accomplish and the game allows you to see what still needs doing. The commissions and journey and seasons goals likewise, although there is a bewildering array of them. My one complaint about the missions is that it is sometimes tough to tell when you're done with a mission objective that doesn't come with a reward (like find a key card). I recall spending a couple hours hunting for something that I already found. Which leads to my second quibble, the inventory system is sprawling and you mostly discover its more interesting features by accidentally clicking on some part of the screen you didn't know was clickable.

I haven't yet tried the first boss fight, but I went ahead and moved my base into an area that has endgame resources for my deviants to gather (hopefully), while I busy myself with missions. New areas become open to exploration by the passage of time on the server, and new areas are unlocked by exploration, not by fighting the boss fights. I haven't moved to eternaland yet or survived a server wipe, which I have seen that other players complain about.

I give the game 9 stars out of 10 so far. I recommend it fully.

Yesterday I did get a frustrating long period of game restarts. I see that other players complain about that. Fixed it by turning the computer off and watching tv. Then, I spent about an hour running around the same building on Dog Island looking for mission item. There has to be a happy medium where needed mission objectives stand out better from the background, but less than red or yellow glowing chests. My little butterfly didn't lead me to it (which is really too easy) and the q key which normally shows everything didn't highlight it.

My deviants aren't gathering tungsten and aluminium like I had hoped. I suspect that the digbys are player level gated. Pity, but the scenery out here in the desert is quite good.

The motorcycle is a lot more fun to drive than the truck, (just like rl) which is slower, less maneuverable, and requires expensive refined fuel. I just put a vending machine on the truck and parked it outside a town. Something sold, because the challenge advanced, but I don't know if I got any energy links out of it, because the truck despawned.. Today I soloed the shadow hound for the first time and the silo after the hound to complete my cradle overrides.

I got a better digby (crystal) so I'll have to rebuild a mining platform. My digby also gathers tin and sulfur. I had to move my house to use water as a defensive barrier for purification. I also discovered the joys of using those manufacturing permits to farm acid. It's way easier to calibrate gear when acid is plentiful. Tomorrow I'll learn to fight with the shadow wolf deviant.
