You probably need a higher quality harvesting tool, it should kick out a message if you are using a tool that won't work on it telling you that you need a better tool. A steel pickaxe or higher should work according to the wiki and based on my in game experience earlier today that's accurate. I tried harvesting Startrace with an iron pickaxe, got the "error" message and then switched to a steel pickaxe which worked.

I am playing with a controller so maybe thats why no error, i dunno.
Kinda wish there was an option to keep messages on screen a bit longer.
Hmm... can you try it with the KB/Mouse to see if it works? Might be a key/button setting not working properly for some reason.
Some of the other ore types should also kick back the same message about your tool quality if you're using a tool that isn't good enough.
While you may not have noticed that info in the game there are quality level requirements for various ores. For example a copper pickaxe is the minimum needed to harvest iron ore, steel is the minimum to harvest aluminium and Startrace, and an alloy pickaxe or better is needed to harvest tungsten.
