Animal Trough

Is there any way to make the food last longer in the animal trough? They expire so fast and I find myself constantly trying to get them food. Which is easy, but its just a task to do when I'm trying to do other things.

The animal feed spoils really slowly but also doesn't meet their specific dietary needs. So I like to keep some animal feed in their trough to cover me and then I try to just give them enough fresh food to last them without it spoiling.

edit: that's for animals I'm taming, already tamed animals can just eat animal feed all the time
