How does the Chaosium Lantern actually work?

I have it in my inventory. It says to press F to use but nothing happens. There is no signal or anything to indicate if it's working or not. My chaosium goes down by 10 every time I press F but I don't have any idea how long it will last.
Can someone please explain to me how this device works>

pin it to your hotbar and you can turn it on and off. other than that no really way to tell but looking at the temp gauge change, no idea on consumption. i think it takes way too much for it to be worth it maybe emergency. make the all weather stew most problems solved.

I can't get it to do anything. It just uses chaosium but has zero effect on temps. Some of the food buffs are the same.

The Temp is what it is. Its the radial bar under the temp that moves as you buff

look at the colored bar in temperature, you will see that it will decrease the size of one of the colored bars.
