Winter scenario oddly slow and hard?
For context: I compare this to my experience with the manibus scenario at launch.

I've been playing the winter scenario for a week now. However, it feels a lot harder to stumble into refined parts and making T3+ equipment.

I have "max" calibrated T2 gears, weapons and armor, yet I feel anything above level 15 just nukes me while the game won't give me anything to improve survivability or damage output.

Is it intended to be that much more difficult and as well a bit frustrating?

On top I've chosen one of the experienced player spawn locations, only to realise there is so little to do, I have to switch over to the eastern zone and do missions there.

Additionally it feels like I constantly HAVE to stack torch, heatium, warm food and a chest piece assisting with cold resistance. Otherwise the game just will let me freeze to death.

So, my "general" question: Am I doing something wrong or missing something? Why am I so squishy? How can I reliably stay warm without having to annoyingly stack all these heating sources and why are there areas in the first two zones which are SO COLD that even after doing all of this, I still dip into freezing without a torch, have to dismount my bike and walk on foot?

I really want to enjoy this scenario, but I'm already at a stage where I had to tell friends that I'm not sure it's worth it and showed them my struggles with this scenario.

Try getting some bear hide, I think that adds +10 cold. Another option for the cold is to make velvet and get +15 cold resist for both pants and shirt. Though you need feather for that, and the best way to get that outside of making a bird farm at your base are the birds in wishland.

Also once one of the later phases unlocks, you can eventually get a stew that almost trivializes normal temperature issues.

You aren't doing something wrong, you are complaining that it's too bothersome for you to adjust to the mechanics of Way of winter. If you were watching their live stream for way of winter or joined their discord, I remember them saying that Way of winter is intended for experienced players. It is also emphasized that temperature is a concern in this scenario. If you are complaining this much at the start of the game and picked "experience player spawn locations", you already answered your question " I'm not sure it's worth it".

I am assuming you're on phase 1, not to give any spoilers but temperature reaches -45 degrees to 80 degrees in later phases.

You have "T2 maxed calibrated gear" and yet you missed how to craft a chest and pants to add temp resistance? I mean were you even try to read stuff or did you just select T2 and craft?

Woa... why so hostile?

Of course I used reindeer hides for chest and pants.

It is indeed phase 1 but your assumption is terrible. First, to play a game you don't have to read discord and every live stream. Some folks have a life (and know how to be kind to each other). And the ingame survival handbook explains how it works, but little on how to cope with it.

And yes, ofc temperature is a concern. It's literally one of the things where I wonder if I missed something...

Ask yourself, would I have asked the way I did, if I didn't want to enjoy the game and this scenario? Literally asking for help, not for shaming from a wannabe-elite who only responds to make themselves feel better.

So, let's restart this if you're willing to be more useful:

Chest/pants have reindeer hide
I'm always carrying heatium
have my spiketomato food on hand
In worst case I'm using the torch (imho happens to frequently tho)

Any advise what can help?

Agree, not sure why that responder is lashing out so aggressivly to a pretty standard question for a new player in the Way of Winter. I'm new here, too & was wondering the same thing. I've progressed over from Onyx Tundra to Vena Fjord and was wondering about the T3 items & where they might drop.

I'm thinking it has been level 20/21 and up to find these drops, but maybe it's a bit higher here in this cold harsh land. :)

T3 material drops are in 20-30 areas I believe. Just hover over the icons of the settlements/locations on the map to see if they are within the level range for the mats.

That said I noticed you do get lower tier mats thrown into the junk you collect, no matter the level area you are in.

Dayum I was wondering where I can get feathers since I have one in my storage. thought it's way later. Thanks for all the tips!

Aside of it I just found a facepalm-moment. I totally overlooked the chaosium lantern!
While I have no idea when/where I find hot rocks etc, I found already a good bunch from vultures and now that I've crafted it, suddenly the game opens up.

nonetheless, gonna go bird plucking and bear hunting now!

You can also hunt buffalo for high tier valley and mountainous hides.

Mountainous gives 15 resist for cold.
Valley give 15 to heat resist.

Both also give a +20 to load.

I honestly have not had a hard time farming them either.

If you're having issues with temps in phase 1 you should seek out better animal hide and remake your chest and pants. The hide you use for all your equipment provides different effects but only chest and pants boost temperature resistance.

Seal is what I used for cold res. Croc for heat res.

Besides that make temp res food and use a heat/cool rock. At night there are areas in phase 1 that will kill you without stacking other res buffs on top of what your gear gives. Gear by itself is not enough.

Temps in later phases are even worse. Gear by itself is absolutely not enough then. I strongly suggest educating yourself about the different sources of temp resistance before the next phase starts.

way of winter is a different kind of scenario than manibus. You have to learn all the new mechanics as if learning the game from scratch. Have fun.
