There's no skills to upgrade. You upgrade your equipment through calibration at gear workbenches. You can and should also craft higher tier gear as you level and move into new areas with new materials. That's the main way you get stronger. Your equipment. Also, having a plan for a build (Bomber, Frost, Burn, etc.) will really help so you can plan what gear you want to get later with the Wish Machine. That way you aren't just buying anything and everything only to later find out that you can't afford what you need for the build you want.
There are Memetics that you can unlock. They aren't skills per se. Rather, they're abilities. For example, you can't craft high tier gear until you unlock the Advanced Gear Workbench in your Memetic tree. You can't craft better food/drink until you proceed down the Meme tree and unlock each Meme along the way. And you can't craft better ammo until you unlock it in the Memetic tree and have access and the ability to gather the resources to do so.
There are Specializations that unlock every 5 levels. But the good ones don't unlock until you're higher level. They allow you to make things that you normally can't such as Solar Drills and Backpack Expansions.
Basically, there are no skills. You get stronger in a myriad of ways as you level up and gather resources to craft better stuff.
If you really need more help, ask in world chat. There's probably a server Discord that someone has made. Or, join a Hive with a Discord. Get in voice chat and have someone explain it to you.

Levels mean nothing in this game. You can be level 50 and die to level 3 mobs.

The reason is because only Gear (i.e. weapons and armor) provide stats.

Every 10 levels you unlock a new tier of Gear that you can wear.

Level 0 = Tier I gear
Level 10 = Tier II gear
Level 20 = Tier III gear
Level 30 = Tier IV gear
Level 40 = Tier V gear

If you have difficulty with the content in between the the tiers, you upgrade the current gear you have via Calibration. This helps to bridge the in-between levels till you unlock the next tier.

So, what tiers of gear you can wear are based on your character level.

Meanwhile, what tiers of gear you can craft are based on the grade of the workbenches (basic -> intermediate -> advanced). Those you need to use the memetic points to unlock.

Here is your progression.
Dont skip tutorial.
Craft benches
Craft equipment
Loot
Craft higher level benches
Loot
Craft higher tier equipment.

This is how you get stronger.
Leveling alone does not give you any stats.
You need skill points from leveling to unlock higher level crafting benches.

You can craft Tier II gear and use it already.

Materials are based on regions:
- Dayton Wetlands
- Broken Delta
- Iron River
- Chalk Peak
- Red Sands
- Blackheart

So, depending on which area you are in, mob levels will be different and the materials you get from dismantling loot is gonna correspond to the tier of gear you can craft.

In case you haven't already, the dismantler is a MUST to build. You need it to dismantle the loot you pick up. Also, pick up everything in towns (spam F). They all can be dismantled for materials.

One other thing is cradle perks. Press O. Then, choose the option on the right and you will see the menu for cradle perks specific for the scenario (i.e. Manibus, Way of Winter, Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash) you are playing in. To unlock more slots, read the description when you hover over a locked slot (on right side of screen; the left side is by level) and it will tell you what you need to do.

Then, also choose a memetic specialisation. Press O again and go back to the earlier screen. Now choose the option on the left which is where you see the menu to unlock crafting. Click on the gold circle on top left and choose a perk every 5 levels.

I don't even know how to tell that. I just look at the map and I honestly go for that quest area and I still get rekt. I don't know how to figure this game out.
