It depends on what you expect and need. Planters look neat and organized, but you can fit much more loamy soil in the same space—three planters equal ten loamy soils. Planters give about a 15% growth boost, and that’s it—same yield, same mutation chance, as far as I've tested it.

also crafting the planter takes nearly double the water and spoiled food and uses logs and gravel and

You forgot that planting in planters increases the plant's vitality, as shown in a little leaf symbol, which can lead to more yield if high enough theorically...
I have never planted in loomy soil, so i cant tell if that icon also appears on those, if so, ignore my dumb comment lmao

Did one loamy soil for the Journey task and planted a bellflower in it (or coneflower?). Also put down some planter boxes. Let's just say that while the planter boxes are all on at least their third planting cycle, I'm still waiting for that single flower to finish growing so I can harvest it ...
