Fishing is broken ! First off . When you cast and nothing hits it , they just swim all over it but never take the bait . You have to just reel it in and re-cast . When you do this , it costs a bait and sometimes this will happen 4-5 times in a row . So 10 minutes , no fish and wasted materials for bait . Second, they run under the docks with no way to turn them and escape . Or , they just run straight out again with no way to turn them and they just get away . Third , I am TIRED of catching the same 5 fish over and over with different baits at diffeent locations . Add these all up , can you see how unbelievably fun fishing is ! I just spent 14 minutes at a fishing event to catch 7 fish , seriously , 7 fish . Such a good time .

If you're not getting a bite, then move to a different spot. That spot's all fished out.
Use a lure in your next spot and the fish will bite for longer.
As for the fish swimming in weird places...surprisingly, it doesn't seem to affect fishing. I've pulled them out from under the dock I'm standing on.
The rarer fish (blue, purple rarity) are just more difficult to catch and take a bit of finagling the line to get the top bar to move to the right for the catch.
As for catching a wider variety of fish, try Googling "once human fishing locations" and you'll be surprised what you can find.

Go find the leaping frog deviant, you get universal fishbait that will catch all fish. And he gives way to much so U never need to worry about bait again. I give mine away

the UI is also... questionable.
you have to look where fish is, at the center of the screen, and also at the two bars on far right. which might not be that much of a problem if your monitor is 4:3, but with 32:9 it is a big problem. why not move the bars to the center?

Yep the fishing in this game is borked. Find a shallow spot you can cast in with banks on each side. 9 times out of 10 the fish is caught within seconds as soon as it's hooked. Got fed up of fish instantly booking it and snapping the line. Least intuitive fishing mechanic in any game I've ever played.

It feels to me like so many of the systems in this game are not intuitive at all. Even reading the tutorial at times has me saying "wtf does that mean".

So I think I've got this sussed out.. when the fish runs left, turn your rod to the right and hold mouse button down.. when straight out look up.. when lower bar is running down, let go of mouse button to let slack out.. if you got him hooked good the top bar will fill up. I just caught 5 sardines and a mackerel in a row off a pier..

The fishing mechanics been revamped, now you can watch the fish eyeballing your bait until the next maintenance, if you want ^^;

7 fish in 14 minutes? Dang wish I can pull that off on my next fishing trip at the golf course pond !!!
