Tracking how many time a player logged into the game is actually super useful for the devs. Usually, it's not only how many times but also the actual time you logged into the game and the playtime for each session.
These metrics can be used to optimized the time to do maintenance for example, or to introduce game events etc. For the specific case of knowing how many times a user logged into the game, this is to establish the player's retention rate so of course it's not a pointless metric.
