Once Human

Once Human

FPS problems on a higher end computer, friend PC's run it fine (SOLVED)
SOLUTION AT BOTTOM OF THIS POST HERE

My PC is significantly stronger than my brother's, I recently upgraded, and we've compared specs, mine is stronger in every regard, and yet I have significant FPS issues in Once Human, and ONLY Once Human. My brother says he's got upwards of 59-60+ FPS (he has it locked at 60) and only has slight drops when many enemies are on screen, however I, myself, suffer from roughly 24 fps, dropping to as low as about 5 when I get into melee with two enemies or even just open or close a storage crate...on Very Low graphics settings. Every other game I play on this PC, no matter what it is, runs on 80+ frames, 70-ish on the more intensive ones, on Ultra settings, and yet Once Human, for some reason, eludes me.

I'm not sure exactly what specs I should list here, but I'll do what I can think of.

Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 (12 CPUs), ~2.5GHz (had 100% CPU usage initially during play, overclocked to 3.0GHz and CPU usage dropped for roughly 70%, but no change in framerate)
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT
32GB RAM
Windows 11
DirectX 12 (Running with -dx11 changes nothing either)

Things I have tried in order to fix the issue:

Tried every 'Cap Framerate' option both in-game and in AMD settings
Tried every level of Graphics Setting
Overclocked GPU and CPU
Run game at every resolution option
Run game in Windowed Mode
Uninstalled and Reinstalled on three sperate SSD Drives + Verified File Integrity via Steam on each drive, as well as run in-game Repair Client option
Uninstall and Reinstall Steam
Run Malewarebytes (Three times, no threats detected)
Turned off Xbox Gaming Bar
Run in Compatibility Mode
Turned on 'Gaming Mode' in PC settings

I'm sure there's a few other things I'm forgetting that I've done...but I'm really not sure what more I could do. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, or what more information you need about my system to formulate a good solution, please let me know. I enjoy playing this game with my brother and our friends, but I can't handle this game with this FPS issue -and- seasonal resets.

EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND HERE! -----------------------------------------------

Including the solution/issue post here in its entirety so people won't have to scroll down the entire thread to find it

There has been a development.

I seem to have identified the problem, and it is definitively not with my system...sort of.

After doing further research along with the mentioned brother and friend I play this game with, we found two things - Most people having this problem were running AMD Graphics cards, and were playing via steam.

After seeing suggestions about running the game through the Netease launcher, Loading Bay, I tried it myself, and wouldn't you beleive it, framerate was amazing.

It seems that the combination of an AMD Card + Running the game on Steam crunches framerates. My brother and friend both play via steam, however they are running Nvidia cards, so i am left with the conclusion that it is a combination of the two.

Further searching led me to this reddit forum:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnceHumanOfficial/comments/1e1cy21/using_loading_bay_with_steam_account/

specifically the post near the bottom by user- digbysilver -about how to play your Steam character on the netease launcher version of the client, since you can't link accounts. I can confirm after testing (though not much more than placing and removing a few items in my base) that progress is synced between both clients after following these listed instructions, and I am able to now play the game with a good framerate. While it does require having two installed downloads of the game, I am fortunate enough to have the space on my PC to allow it, and can now finally play the game and actually see what's going on.

However, any further information about other potential issues or solutions is more than welcome, and I hope more people post additional options, just in case someone with my problem stumbles upon this forum, and this solution does not work for them.

Not exactly relevant, but technically both. I got so absorbed in the description I forgot to change the title. I'm playing with my brother and a seperate friend at the same time, both with weaker systems, both have no FPS issues.

As anyone who grew up in the 90s knows, software conflicts are often a bigger culprit than hardware issues with technology. So even if you have a superior machine to your family's, you may have not as clean running one. This especially applies to newer hardware which is dependent on newer driver support, hence why people usually suggest updating drivers.

The only weakness I'm seeing is that you're using an i5 which is not quality for gaming, like running a 4050 instead of a 4070 (huge difference).

I can't be certain that's even an issue at all. While it may not be high quality for gaming, I need to stress that this problem is exclusive to Once Human. I can play any toher game out there, Helldivers with 100+ mobs on screen + explosions, First Descendant with ability quality up, FF14 with raid spell effects on without dropping below 60 fps, all on ultra settings, but Once Human, even on Very Low graphics, slaps me below 10 fps just from openign a damn storage crate. There's got to be something else, right?

Not necessarily. MMOs especially are well known for being CPU bound, they have a lot processing in the background. Optimization will eventually allow the game to run easier on weaker hardware but for now it asks for a lot from your CPU. Look around the forums, high end PC users complaining about their CPU being 100% utilized.

Correct, however, any other MMO I run, FF14, WoW, Tarisland, First Descendant, all of that runs fine. As I mentioned in my post, my CPU usage was indeed capped at 100% when running Once Human, I then went into BIOS, overclocked my CPU just a bit, maintaining good temperatures, and now while running the game, CPU usage tops out at 80%, so that can't be bottlenecking it anymore.

So and what computer youre brother have exactly? Because youre computer isnt "higher end", its mid class.

But yes, you should get waaay more than 24 fps.

It is higher end than my brother's, yes. Thing's only a year old, and my brother's is thrice that. Can't recall what the exact specs are on his system but we've compared it multiple times, each component, and each one, on my side, is more powerful/newer/stronger/has more stuff/etc.

Youre 12400 CPU have s iGPU inside. I read another thread where one guy is saying once human only uses his iGPU. Maybe you have the same problem, that would fit with youre 24 fps.
Kyutaru Jul 26, 2024 @ 10:34pm
Ya open task manager and make sure the game is using your dedicated graphics card, not the integrated one.
King Rhiot Jul 26, 2024 @ 10:39pm
Opening the Task Manager while running the game shows two different "GPU" statistics, GPU 0, listed as the Intel(R) UHD Graphics 730 (which I presume is the integrated), has 0% usage.

GPU 1, AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT running with 7-17% usage on Very Low settings. Unless my Task Manager is telling me lies, I do beleive it's running off the non-integrated GPU

What are youre cpu temperatures? Because that game can heat up youre cpu like hell.
Maybe youre cpu clock goes down because of overheating? I get sometimes 90°C in this game with my r9 5900X.

A i5-12400 has 6 cores and 12 threads, not "12 CPU's"

Try disabling your igpu entirely.
