wats the point of mailboxes

why cant i leave mail in mailboxes. i see these mailboxes all the time at other players houses and i want to leave them letters (very nice letters i assure you) and i cant.

I presume it's for messaging friends, as well as in-game emails from the Devs. Since I don't want junk from players I don't know, I played safe (in case someone could click it and leave messages I have no interest in) and put my mailbox inside my base, not outdoors. I am often amused that people seem to think the game needs their mailbox outdoors - it's not like a mailman needs acces to it!
