The developers have requested feedback on their wipe mechanic and signaled they may be open to adjusting or even removing it, so leaving feedback here and on their Discord server (and filling out those surveys they sent in-game) is probably the best way to get your opinion across.
Sigh. It's not "crying". I wish people would understand that two people can enjoy completely different aspects of a game and what matters to one may not matter to another.
He seems to understand how wipes work, he simply doesn't seem to value gear progression the same way you do. To him it's about being able to retain the things he feels he earned over the course of his adventure (whether you feel those things are meaningless or not).
He also seems to enjoy moving through each region methodically and completing everything in them, and this has resulted in him not completing the main story. Now he's faced with the prospect of having to redo a significant part of the main story all over again to get back to where he was, and that is understandably not appealing.
None of that may matter to you but it clearly seems to matter to him. Nobody is having fun "wrong", but it's obvious the design does not support one type of fun as well as the other.
