If does get harder, you think they're going to make the first dungeon in the game the hardest thing there is?
Icegxd Jul 10, 2024 @ 12:37pm
it's a real shame the game has no difficulty I think it's going to make me stop, it's impossible to die, we can't call it a "survival game"

Harder, yes. But it never get hard. It's just gets harder than the first 99% of the game, and apparently that catches some players off-guard. I assume they just got accustomed to everything being super simple.

I see the "intro" and "first dungeon" excuse is already being used, but once upon a time the intro zone was a little scary, because it was populated with more challenging creatures, survival mechanics were actually a thing, character progression was a lot slower, and equipment/supplies were harder to come by. The first dungeon was wiping teams with guide videos flooding Youtube warning players to bring thousands of rounds of ammo.

You should not have to progress through 99% of the game to reach content that requires you focus on the game instead of whatever is playing on Netflix in the background.

This game is a sad joke compared to what it used to be 7 or so months ago. The people who are enjoying what we have now likely believe this is as good as it got, and are unaware of what was lost over the course of its development.

Well, as an ancient gamer I don't mind the game is easier than most. Too many games seem like bullet hells to me these days, lol.

Let's just touch on one example of how Once Human used to be more engaging and meaningful, with something as simple as "food".

First, food came from three sources: scavenging, hunting/fishing, and growing. However, most food was not good for your character (I'll go into this more later).

Scavenging allowed you to get canned foods that bypassed the problem with food spoilage, but it wasn't very common. If you've watched the first few seasons of The Walking Dead this game had a similar vibe in that respect. Scavenging also allowed you to recover fruits and vegetables, but they spoiled quickly and often caused the player to lose sanity (it had to do with the Stardust), which caps your maximum health (among other things).

In fact most foods caused sanity loss. Cooking the food typically helped to avoid this, but primarily only once you reached the stage of unlocking advanced cooking recipes. And progressing through the memetic tree to unlock these skills was both slower and took more effort in earlier betas because memetic tree progression was gated by objectives like defeating specific regional bosses. Points for unlocking skills in the tree were also harder to come by.

Hunting was a decent way to get meat, but it was challenging because the crossbow took more effort/time to get, and chasing the deer down to kill them with a melee weapon failed as often as it succeeded. The most effective method I found back then was using line of sight with the trees combined with crouching to sneak close enough to deer while they were resting, and then sprint at them with club in hand and shoulder-tackle them. When you finally got access to the crossbow and could get beyond this method it felt pretty empowering.

Plus, the newbie area was filled with aggressive gators and wolves back then, making chasing deer through landscapes peppered with ponds of water pretty unsafe. And cooked meat also had the problem of lowering your sanity. You could use it to make safer salted meat (which also didn't spoil), but that took a lot of effort (relative to now) to set up (again, memetic progress to unlock the meat racks was slower, getting salt was time consuming and required trips to the sea, etc.).

Growing your own crops was the long term goal, but that required a fair bit of progression through (and investment in) the memetic tree. And in the beginner stages you had to spend a lot of time tending to them by hand to get a decent yield. The amount of sunlight and the amount and type of water they received impacted the yield greatly. Getting purified water was a real challenge, and the lower quality boiled water was time consuming and resource intensive (you used to have to craft your own limited-use water containers), produced lower quality crops, and greatly cut into your water supply. Just getting a water system set up at your base to assist with all of this was a major milestone. A lot of this has been since nerfed into nothingness.

I mentioned earlier that not all food was "good" for your character, and I wasn't only talking about the sanity issue. How often you ate, and what you were eating, and the activities you were performing had an impact on your characters body weight and appearance, and the game would automatically adjust it. And your character's body weight impacted your stats.

These days your character's body weight at character creation still impacts your stats, but with the current setup it's nearly impossible to accidentally change your weight while playing. In the past, players were constantly struggling with their characters being malnourished or overweight from not eating enough or eating the wrong (easier to make) foods. Maintaining a stable body weight and keeping your character fit took effort. Food, as an aspect of survival in a survival genre, was something we were always having to think about.

Which brings us to now. When is the last time you've had to worry about food or any of this stuff I mentioned? Outside of the first few minutes of creating a character, food is almost never an issue. Within my first 15 minutes I had more food on me than I could reasonably use. If I log on and have no unspoiled food in my pocket I just run and grab a few hawthorn berries, grill them, and I'm set for the evening. That used to not work well (they caused extreme sanity loss).

And it's not just food. Everything in the game used to be deep and interesting and tied together like this. Not anymore, though, and that's where the frustration is coming from.

And I get that this may not be everyone's cup of tea, and some people just prefer mindless-easy levels of relaxation, but that should be reserved more for games like Dorfromantik, and not post-apocalyptic horror-themed survival sims.

Wait for full PvP servers and you will have to survive ;)
Echo Jul 10, 2024 @ 12:58pm
no the first boss on normal difficulty was the hardest content

jokes aside the only "difficult" content i met was the Forsaken Giant and some endgame Lab raid. Even that difficulty comes from simply having them 10 levels above your level cap, making you take more and deal less damage. if you want something sweaty this is probably not for you

lol go to where there is level 30-40 when your only 10-15... yes it gets harder. If you choose. You can build your self into a super hero with all the options or you can keep it average and have a challenge. You will get 3-4 shot later on depending on gear. The first areas for for building up and learning the game. Then once you get to the third camp and after it gets a bit more challenging. Is it perfect right now? no most games like this take a year or two to get balancing worked out.

Yeah too easy most of the time. They need to add mobs scaling or even hard mode (not hardcore).

So players need to intentionally nerf themselves, or chase content twice their levels to be challenged? This is good game design? Are you hearing yourself right now?

This game has been in development for over 5 years and has only gotten progressively easier over time. And now with the mobile release on the horizon you are expecting the difficulty to shift in the other direction? Really? That is some serious copium.
