If I'm not mistaken there is a way to get a fridge of some form for your camp that decreases the timer? Not 100 on that but I think I saw that looking through the tree last night.

so i tip early in the game is to get a passive that turns expired food into mushrooms, you can use them to cook grilled mushrooms which restore a good amount of sanity

I think it's glitched for me. I eat cooked shrooms, sanity restores and then decreases again. wtf is this.

Fridge will keep stuff fresh for several days at least, but you can also use drying racks or created packaged food.

portable fridge and a fridge is what I use. my food lasts for days

I think sanity drops to a level in Polluted area minus the resistance from your Gear. After leaving the area you can restore it to full HP.
But I found out that sleeping is even better then...
