Once Human

Once Human

Prologue, homage or just straight up plagiarism to Control?
While any one element is not strictly a Remedy Entertainment exclusive, the combination of the 60s equipment, red fuzzy mist, scarce use of lighting, the sound effect, the stone cubes architecture for the otherworldly feel and an item quite literally called "Control Briefcase" that (I'm pretty sure) uses animations ripped straight from Control.

I feel like there's a line here and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. They might even get away with it because it's NetEase and they're in China. What does everyone else think?

not like remedy invented any of that , didn't feel it when playing i get what your pointing at but you could easily argue there both taking from old twilight zone episodes,

a science area where dodgy experiments went wrong .. i mean its not a rare setting. seems iterative enough for me.

As I said, not one element is exclusive to Remedy but their games have a really particular aesthetic combination, "old twilight episodes" have maybe one or two element.

"Sciency SCP", which is (coincidentally, I'm sure) what inspires and was contained in Control. I don't see why they have to have 60s equipment around or use the exact red mist and effect in Control, square slabs that make up the architecture and let's not forget about the animation ripped straight out of control. You can argue one element but when almost all element is copied straight from another game, I think there is a case to be made.

It's like when someone copies the entire spider-man design and just flipped his logo upside down, that would still be copying spider-man, the argument wouldn't be spider-man didn't invent spiders.

Difference is SpiderMan is pretty heavily copyrighted and im pretty sure nothing about Control is lol. I mean this year alone has had probably a dozen games I can think of off the top of my head that clearly ripped from other games. Palworld comes to mind right away lol.

I think Control is a dog sh*t game and your mind is placing what you want to see for this bias you've created.

They definitely use a few specific Control aesthetics in the tutorial. Easy way to let you know the vibe of the game. I also see lots of references to other things throughout so far though.

The official website describes the game as "New Weird" in style, which is kind of a fancy way of saying recent Lovecraftian writing. For instance the Control devs openly pay homage to new weird writer Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach books, which people probably know more from the film Annihilation. If they made the second book into a film it would look a lot like Control. Remedy's writers read.

To be clear, it's not called "control briefcase". It says "control _" on any body part of a monster you can control. In this case, a briefcase.

I've not seen this game before today and I completed control like 2 years ago, it is not fresh in my mind yet everything reminds me of it, it's not a bias that I went in looking for.

So there are other body parts you can "control"? I don't suppose they use the animation for control exactly in the place that looks like control as a coincidence.

That's good point although I can't say I've read any of Jeff VanderMeer's books or watched Annihilation but I'll take your word for it.

To be clear, I'm never said anything about copyright, the elements that makes Remedy games isn't copyrighted but it's distinctly them. I'm just torn between homage or plagiarism, I think both sides have some legs to stand on.

On one hand you have Palworld which at first glace, you see pokemon but I've seen enough to say "Ok, they're just kind of pokemon-esque because they have their distinct differences." but when I see the prologue, I just see Control, maybe it's just me but I don't see any distinct differences other than the monsters.

There's also an up-side-down pyramid on the ceiling in the starting area.
So yeah, definitely a lot of Control inspired themes here.

The industry created Palworld and people are still complaining that developers are copying from others?

Lol.... thats actually the joke of the day. Good one!

Who cares what they take inspiration from? Original ideas are basically like unicorns in the modern age.

Ive played Control and Ive played Once Human. They are not the same game, they are nothing alike either.

When I play once human, it doesnt make me think about control and when I played control, It doesnt remind me or make me think about once human lol

If we are talking inspiration, I see more from the division, and who knows from the building aspect since theres so many games that have similar building mechanics.

once human feels like its own game, with its own story and game mechanics.

Random question, does Destiny feel like Halo?

IDK how the game is outside seeing my friend stream it for a bit but from what I could see the butterfly girl is just a straight rip off off Zero from Drakengards down to the white butterfly covering the exact same eye, except Zero has a white rose. :OctaviaShrug:
Plagiarism at it's finest (and the only reason I knew it was a Chinese game was because of the plagiarism, as it's very common from the Chinese games I've played)
