Half Voiced Scenes
Forgive me if this is a dumb question...

I'm not very far into the game and I've noticed that some scenes will have one or two lines voiced or lines from one character voiced but not the others.

Is this normal? Is the game intended to have this weird, sporadically voiced dialogue? (English Voices, haven't tried Japanese.)

Yep they have done this for every game pretty much to save on the cost of voice acting. It would be nice to atleast have every line to voiced when they do voice characters. But it is what it is.
Yeah, it's a little jarring. I understand voice acting is expensive but I think if you can't afford to voice a full scene you shouldn't voice act any of it. Having half-voiced scenes just sound weird.

Finally i got an answer, i tot my game is bugged cuz some of the voice not VOICING in the middle of conversation
Ogami Jul 6, 2024 @ 8:53am
Thats because:

A: voice acting is expensive, especially in Japan

B: Japanese voice actors are paid per word spoken

C: FALCOM still insists in using famous voice actors from anime and such
(for example the Japanese Rean voice is super expensive to hire)

D: this results in only spartial voice acting because of the low budget of the games

In the past XSEED dubbed a ton of additional lines for the English version to make it sound less akward with non voiced sections in the middle of a conversation but for whatever reason they stopped doing that after the Cold Steel games and just stick 1:1 with just dubbing the existing Japanese voice lines.

It was because the first two Cold steel games were translated by Xseed and not NISA and they added a TON of extra english lines.

Ah thx for the correction, just remembered that they added extra lines but it makes sense that Xseed did that work and NISA would not.

Ignore the "VA is expensive, doot doot doot!".

Cold Steel 1 and 2 (XSEED) were fully voiced, yet cost the exact same as Cold Steel 3 and 4 (NISA). XSEED decided on their own to voice lines that weren't previously. Which is the hallmark of a company that actually cares.

Bottom line: some companies prioritize a good job and some don't.

Reverie also had more voice acting. And honestly should it be up to a english publisher to"fix" the lack of voice acting?

No but if they do add more voice acting it sure is nice. And since they used to do it before it sets an expectation for players that they will continue to do it. Regarding how expensive it is or not it is generally true that in Japan it is alot more expensive. Especially since Falcom always use very popular and high demand voice actors for the job. And the budget for these titles have never been huge. Aswell as having ALOT of text and dialouge.

Cold Steel 1 and 2 were not even CLOSE to fully voiced in English.
Cold Steel 1 and 2 had about 5000 additional voice lines dubbed in English by XSEED.
The Japanese versions had about 9000 lines voiced so 14000 overall.
But there is still tons of unvoiced dialog in CS 1+2 plus all the NPC talk.

i replayed previous cs games and sky and yea it is not fully voiced either

I have my gripes with nisa but atleast so far they haven't strayed to far for me atleast. I genuinely thought a certain costume for milliium would be cut in the localized version in reverie but it wasn't. I haven't gotten super far in kuro yet though.

However if Erick Sparrow ever stops being Jusis I'll riot.
