I got the items from Jimbo to attract the animals I need to kill. I'm at the farm in the northeast corner where the map says I need to go for the cow. I can't seem to begin an encounter with any of the cows. What am I missing? How do I use the items Jimbo gave me?

Need to use the cowbell(by the fence entrance) for the cow you need to fight to show up.

I've tried to activate that but no success. I got the rabid dog; that one just appeared by wandering around by Kenny's house. No luck either finding the bacteria by the school after wandering around that area. And I walked around the Canadian border crossing and nothing happened there either.

The farm has cowbell on the fence - ring that and another cow will come that you can hit with one shot to kill. The bacteria is in a dish in one of the rooms in the school (like a Janitors closet or something). The one in Canada (after crossing into Canada - after you are given a passport to get in) requires you to talk to Terrence and Phillip before you can get to where you need to be. Just keep playing - some skills and abilities required to get all the animals come later in the story.

OK. I'm currently locked out of the school and don't have a passport so I guess there's still some other things I need to do first to get those.

i found the spider as soon as i entered canada, it was easy to kill aswell

I've almost finished the game within these past cuople of days so I can tell you that the bacteria will spawn in the basement of the school during the story, just when you get back into the school explore everything.
