How do I get past the rats?

I'm on the quest to go to Canada. I can't get past the rats. I remember coming across the rats at some point and it told me how to get past them, but I didn't need past them so I forgot what it was and now I'm stuck until I can get past them.

Google doesn't have anything. So what's the trick? I'm a level 14 Mage, so I would hope that I've progressed enough to have the ability to do this.
