How do I clear the rats in front of Cartman's house?

I've tried hitting them with my Jew staff, farting on them, shooting them. When I hit Q I don't have any other tools. I've looted Butter's house and Cartman's and haven't found other tools. I've tried taking Timmy's transport but it's not connected to anything.

I assume its the games way of preventing you from moving on until a later point in the game.

Yup. It's to block you from going that way...go the other way and beat down the road block with your weapon and you're on your way...
