I've never seen an episode of South Park.
What am I missing and should I start with Season 1 if I decide to try it?

if you didnt see an episode of southpark you wont understand all jokes and easter eggs;) but that doesnt mean that you cant play the game:) yes start with season 1. some people say that they are too cheap but i like them more than the episodes from season 17:D

The first 4 seasons are pretty bad so I think season 5 would be the best place to start.

I wouldnt say that. remember the sexual harrasment panda or the chinpokomon episode;)

all the seasons are great but for a newcomer start with season 5

Well, I say you can start wherever you like... BUT I would highly recommend you go with one of the 3 parter episodes (There is a pretty damn good 3 parter in the latest season, which is the second to last 3 episodes, startin with "Black Friday".) You can watch them all at www.southparkstudios.com, if it's not available where you live, you probably have a local, official site that does it instead, so I recommend a google search for that.

Other 3 parters would Imaginationland which is also great, and another, but since you're not aware of the background of one paticular character, you'd miss out on a pretty big and important running gag's reference in that one, so I recommend you watch the ♥♥♥♥ trilogy only after you've seen a couple (especially early) episodes.

Also just a note: Season 1-4 had a lot of episodes that were more for "♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles" (For lack of a better expression) than the brutal but true social commentary that made them truly great beyond silly gags. Still, I personally like those episodes too, but it might be discouraging if you're just going in.

EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention: I didn't give the exact SeasonxEpisode numbers, because SouthParkStudios has a seach function. But to be more direct, just follow this link to the episode player http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s17e07-black-friday (I picked out the first episode of the aforementioned Black Friday trilogy. If and when you watched all three episodes, you'll understand why it is more relevant than most here. Have fun!)

As with any show that's been running that long, South Park has evolved quite a bit over time. If you do start with season 1, and it's not your thing, you probably shouldn't dismiss the later seasons along with it. Personally, I would suggest skipping the first season for now, and starting on 2 or 3, but 5 isn't a bad choice to start out with either.

You have to start at the beginning! The show certianly "shifts gears" in season 5 but the first four seasons are still great. Mexican Staring Frog, the Kathy Lee Gifford one, THE METEOR SHOWER EPISODES, now that's what I call a "sticky situation", Korn's Halloween, Mecha Streisand, should I continue? Tons of legendary SP history in the first four seasons.
Google some "Top 10 Episode" lists and watch the essentials, then go back and start at the beginning. Kotaku has a pretty good one: http://kotaku.com/the-ten-best-south-park-episodes-1529964245

But I agree with those above, definitely watch the Black Friday trilogy if you're getting primed for the game.

Seasons 3 to 8 are pretty much "The Golden Age" of South park.
StandingCow Feb 28, 2014 @ 7:36am
Do this... watch some episodes of season 1, if you find yourself not liking it jump up to season 3... if you still aren't liking it try to start at 5.

Now if you don't like it at 5, give up. :)

south park is probably the best comedy on tv. two guys wright direct and do most of the voice acting for everybody in the show. you should start it from episode 1 and watch it all the through ive seen every episode at least 15 times they never get old.
Budnick Feb 28, 2014 @ 7:59am
if you say the first 4 seasons are bad, you probably never watched it from the begining imo. start with 1. if you dont like it thats fine. there are some throw back in the later season that you wont get if you dont watch from the start. like ep.200-201, was a real treat for long time fans.
Skyforger Feb 28, 2014 @ 8:52am
All the seasons are amazing, but the originals have not aged that well. The comedy(being of current events at the time 15 years ago) coupled with the animations back then/there budget might turn new comers away.

Start on about season 4/5.
P.S that's quite an achievement to never have seen a south park espisode before considering its run time.
