"Secret" area in spaceship

Hey, in the lower levels of the spaceship there is a tube that can be opened using the probe on the small console nearby:

I tried to enter it by standing on the opening but when it opens you make a jump and it closes before you can jump in... is there a way to enter this tube or it's just for kicks?

If i remember right its a trap to kill one of the aliens in the tube.

That makes sense. I only realized you could open it after clearing the tube :)
