Do I need to have watched south park to understand this game?

No. I don't watch South Park at all and I've enjoyed the game quite a bit.

but you wont understand alot of the jokes, its like 16 hours of inside jokes that you most likely wont understand unless you look it up or seen some of the joke episodes

No doubt that I'd enjoy the game more if I knew all the jokes, but I am saying that you don't have to watch the show to enjoy the game.

Honestly the main reason you should know something about the show first isn't for any of the few references you would only get if you had. You should have some knowledge of the show to prepare you for the type of humor your going to be seeing.

I think the game would be much more enjoyable and easier to get some of the jokes if you have seen the show, like with the Al Gore side quest line for instance

You don't have to watch the series, but I would STRONGLY recommend it. It makes the game at least 5 times better once you understand all of the inside jokes you would've missed. Just watch it all on Hulu.

might be good idea to pick up the game while it's cheap and come back around to it when you've watched lil bit of the series :P
