Colors Ultimate and Origins are great.
Assuming you mean the crosshairs that appear on enemies when homing attacking, the Gamecube and Dreamcast versions didn't have indicators either. I should know: I have both. They didn't exist until Sonic World Adventure AKA unleashed.
Maybe the Wii port of Battle plays a bit differently. I've only played SA2 on Gamecube, Xbox 360, PC, emulated Dreamcast (Null DC) and physical Dreamcast in that order.
Only in the first game. The second game improved it a bit, Heroes stumbled again then Shadow got it perfect. Just jump toward an enemy and press the A button so you attack the closest one. It isn't rocket science.
The crosshairs from SWA onward aren't bad but they aren't required either.
I didn't know Secret Rings had those as well. I've never played it since I've never owned a Wii.
I don't. Never did: I only had a go of my friend's Wiis and none of them had Secret Rings as far as I know.
The Switch was the first non-handheld Nintendo console I owned since my brother's Gamecube.
