Since when did ANYONE play Sonic for the story???
And this isn't just about Sonic either - video games are a form of art much like books and movies are, which are more than capable of storytelling in ways other forms of art simply can't achieve, that being immersing the player into a fictional world like they're the characters themselves and, if done right, can actually enhance the game experience in ways gameplay alone can't.
BTW I don't play Sonic Adventure 2 because it had a great story, I play it because it had fun, addictive gameplay that's a blast to replay; I did get all the A ranks and had a blast doing so - the story was just the icing on the already delicious cake.

Every single fan translation of a Japanese game Sonic included, compared to the oftentimes horrible, censored English localisations. Non-Sonic examples include the Mother Trilogy (all three games), the Akumajou Dracula/Castlvania games up to and including Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight AKA SOTN on PS1 (the PSP English dub and the Dracula X: Rondo of Blood dub are OK), and the Mario & Zelda ones those franchises are in dire need of.
The Binding of Issac Antibirth compared to Afterbirth & Afterbirth plus. This one was so good, Edmund McMillian made it canon as the Repentance expansion.
Besides the translation mods, the very first of those in the list is the one I'm most intrigued by, especially as -like Sonic 2006- the original TR6 is fun enough as it is but it needs mods to be fully enjoyed and it's still lacking in several areas.
Since 1998 when they had the technology to tell one properly. As NBOX said, games and story go together: the former compliments the latter like icing on a cake or the beer drank with a fish & chip supper. It applies to far more than just Sonic too: People play Doom for the story now since Doom 4 because after Doom 3's misstep in that department, id took a page out of Marathon's book and made the story semi optional but having that optional story be book worthy in the best possible way.
The Mother games without story would just be someone bumming about town hitting things with baseball bats, Half Life would just be Doom 1 and Strife in full 3D with linear, earthbound levels and the Prince of Persia games without story would be like Prince of Persia 3D i.e boring Tomb Raider ripoffs best summed up as Super Mario Bros: Iran edition.
Do you see anyone remaking forces or rise of lyric? Or even Sonic 4 for that matter? 06 had potential to become a good game. But it was executed poorly.
Though the story can't be fixed, ateast the gameplay could be fixed for us to enjoy.
In YOUR opinion, it is. Stop forcing your opinions on others. If you don't like Sonic in General, then don't come to sonic forums.
Although, an RPG 3D platformer hybrid sounds like a really cool idea... I'd be down for that.
The closest examples of such a hybrid would by Dying Light, Mirror's Edge Catalyst and arguably Psychonauts.
