So does Chaos X with Sonic P-06. And both cases are exactly the same thing, the difference being that Sonic P-06 is actually meant to be a remake that fixes the original's flaws, subtly changes the level design and overhauls the gameplay to actually work better, (e.g. mach speed stages, gem system, snowboard physics, character controls, QoL options) whereas Mania just recycles old stages based on the mobile ports in what is supposed to be a brand new game, adding a token new ability for Sonic that's less useful than his normal spin dash.
I liked the old Metal Sonic boss in Stardust Speedway despite its difficulty, but ever since the Encore Mode DLC update it's become too easy with the last phase being a slow paced, boring Kyodai Eggman Robo knockoff that should have stayed in Encore Mode only.
Speaking of which, Encore mode is just a lazy palette swap of all the main stages with an irritating buddy mechanic that tries to ape the success of Sonic Advance 3 and fails. Mighty is just Sonic with armour against spikes & a bounce attack while Ray copies Super Mario Bros 4's awful cape flying mechanics, instead of having a useful power like Knuckles' gliding or Tails giving Sonic a lift.
Let's not forget that many of the new stages just rip off assets from classic zones that didn't appear like Scrap Brain, Death Egg, Casino Night, Sky Chase, Carnival Night, Sandopolis, Wacky Workbench, Sky Base and Quartz Quadrant.
Also, not only are SixtyFiveKills and NBOX right about Whitehead recycling games he didn't actually make (he merely ported them) just to pad out the game, but if they actually did hate Mania, then they are fully allowed to consider it rubbish. It's called an opinion, something that everyone is allowed to have, regardless of differences.
Sonic Advance was a better tribute to Classic Sonic, Sonic 4: Episode 2 was a better tribute. Even Sonic Pocket Adventure too, which was not only 8-bit but it was at least honest about copying its levels from the first 4 games, mostly Sonic 2 in this case.
Advance and S4E2 had more original stages to work with while merely sharing similar themes and gameplay to the classic games, which the former's sequels took advantage of. Kind of like a 2D Sonic Heroes.
Plus, one of the best things I loved about Mania, that being the retro style pixel art from the 16 and 32 bit era, was done better in the Advance trilogy as well.
I don't hate Mania either. It's good as an extention of the Sonic Megamix mod or the 2D Sonic version of Extreme Rise of the Triad if nothing else (plus it's worth fighting fire with fire as SFK said above).
Besides, if it wasn't for Advance 1+3 (opposite numbered order) and Pinball Party, I wouldn't have played the classic games as they introduced me to zone themes and music from them.
Advance I love for blending the old and new and still being fully 2D despite having modern Sonic in it. While enemy placement in Advance 3 could get annoying, switching to easy mode fixed that, plus it was fun to switch it back in order to make the bosses harder once I got good enough.
Advance 3 also has the best special stages next to Flickies Island Saturn/PC, Heroes/Generations 3DS and Mania, though I hated the boring chao hunting required to unlock them.
It's like what Nitro Rad said in his Rascal review: "A good game can be better, but a bad game with good ideas can become something truly wonderful for the very first time". On that note, who's doing the P-06 treatment for Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric or the 3DS games? Exactly.
Especially since Sonic Colors Ultimate is very much a polished turd itself, but without deserving a second chance like 2006 does, the only good ideas the original Colors had being its setting (a giant planetary theme park in space like the setting of Eternam on steroids) and the wisps, if only the latter weren't constantly recycled in later games barring their justified cameo in Generations. Good thing it's currently exclusive to Epic for now where it belongs.
I'm more interested in a fully 3D game with a story I'm actually invested in that makes use of misfired potential than I am one that lies about being 3D and whose writing mostly consists in the awful English dub of unfunny jokes.
No it really isn't. It's full of bad writing especially in the English dub, too many 2D sections, a boring map screen between levels and those tedious red star rings.
An SA1 or World Adventure hub world with its own sub stages is the perfect fit for Colors given it's set on a theme park in space -a setting that incidentally is best executed in full 3D just like real space and real, more earthbound themeparks- and they still blew it.
The levels it does have are also way too short, starting and ending so fast the jet coasters in Egg Planet Park might as well be run by British Rail.
Doesn't even have to be Sonic series, but literally any series in existence. Nobody went so far and above to remake a bad game and make it good, and if there are some cases I'm not aware of I'd love to see them.
