The simplest would be to get Fireproof and Coldproof Blanket items.
These protect your items for as long as they have charges left.
General merchants sometimes stock them, though you can also learn to craft them using the Loom.
The second is to achieve a Fire or Cold Resistance of at least 15 points.
That's probably harder to do, especially if you're constantly upgrading your equipment and can't commit to a certain material.
Frankly i'd just go with trying to nail down the 15 and then carry a couple of spare blankets. It doesn't happen often so it's easier to keep up with them that way.
Additionally, the higher your resistances, the less likely items are to be destroyed. So even if you're sitting at 12 resistance, you may find that item destruction is rare.
You can craft dragonscale boots, gloves, and head. (+12 fire/cold). It may seem like it sucks to not have all those random modifiers from miracle/godly items, but you don't need them anyway. All you need is the ribbon from mirai and then whatever Sustain you can muster on your remaining slots.
As a hint, use a cashmere hammer on your lightsource if you can find one, as that will give it a +4 cold resistance. So dragonscale flower crown, dragonscale shoes, dragonscale gloves, cashmere light source, that leaves you at 12/16, with 2 weapons, 2 rings, chest, belt, back, arm. Having just one of those be scale will set you over the soft cap for both resistances.
(dragonscale can be sheered from any dragonlike creatures including a certain loveable one. Cashmere can be sheared from rabbits, snow putits, snow bears, and some other things you'd imagine would be set for the snow environment).
I hated this mechanic with a passion, but once I got a full set of 8 followers with all their resistances at 15, it's just been smooth sailing ever since.
I think the resistance bonus is based purely on the related Attribute.
Since players normally only have ready access to Fire, Cold, Lightning, Chaos, and Holy Intonation spells, this would be Magic for all but Holy, and then Will for Holy Intonation.
I believe the resistance bonus from Intonation also caps out at +20.
Which is pretty nice, of course.
I just wish we had access to all the elements for Intonation.
Also to whats been said above about resists on equipment... enchant that armor with resists and the resists go up at +2 or +3? Would only take like 3 dragonscale armor pieces at that point or find some godly items that already have fire/cold resist, get 2 dragonscale hammers then max enchant both to get peace of mind, then repeat for the whole party.
